Oct 3, 2002 : Sage Identifies Government IT Spending

📅 - Market research and consulting firm Sage Research (sageresearch.com) announced on Thursday that it has published the findings of the Sage Technology Roundtable "Government Technology Plans," which took place on September 17, 2002.

The Sage Technology Roundtables, says the company, is a series of online focus groups involving qualified high-tech decision-makers, that examine the critical issues surrounding a specific technology or service.
The September session included participation from 10 IT decision-makers and users at local, state and federal government and military agencies. Participants discussed spending priorities, technology perceptions, e-government initiatives, government continuity and other issues.
"One of the most surprising findings in this Roundtable is that many of the participants have decreased their emphasis on price," said Dr. Yardena Rand, a research director at Sage Research. "While cost is still a factor in IT purchasing decisions, total cost of ownership is more important, and some participants said they would gladly pay more to minimize problems."
Among the findings drawn from "Government Technology Plans" are the fact that many respondents would like to deploy WLANs and VPNs, but cost, security are barriers to that; that application support is a big management challenge; agencies have a variety of spending priorities; many of the respondents have employed or are planning e-government initiatives; and respondents are using a variety of strategies to ensure inter-agency interoperability.
The complete transcript and summary of "Government Technology Plans" can be purchased from the Sage Research Web site.
Sage says the next Sage Technology Roundtable will focus on business continuity needs in the enterprise, and will take place Monday, October 21 from 7:00-8:30 pm Eastern time.
