Feb, 2003 : Microsoft Seeks Reliability in Server 2003

📅 - Software giant Microsoft (microsoft.com) released a report on Thursday, detailing a series of features it has added to Windows Server 2003 aimed at improving the reliability of the server operating system and reducing the amount of unplanned downtime experienced by servers.

Due for release in April, Windows Server 2003 is intended to compete against Unix variants offered by companies like Hewlett-Packard, Sum Microsystems and IBM.
With the new release, Microsoft reportedly plans to present the platform as an alternative to Unix as well as encourage customers to upgrade from older versions of Windows. The company has delayed the server's release several times while it works to perfect security and reliability improvements.
"Our goal is to cut customers' downtime by 50 percent," said Bill Veghte, corporate vice president of the Windows Server Group at Microsoft. "It has been reported that Windows 2000 Server customers have experienced three-nines levels of availability out of the box, and our goal is to build on that success and challenge ourselves to deliver an even more reliable, highly productive system in Windows Server 2003."
The company's Datacenter High Availability Program designed for Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition users will include pre-tested configurations on hardware from a variety of providers.
Microsoft says it has also altered how the server handles drivers, which are known to cause system crashes. Systems will block the installation of drivers with known problems and will allow administrators to revert back to a working state after an error occurs. The product will also include the ability to isolate application processes to prevent one crash from causing another.
