Aug, 2003 : Gartner: 20% to Experience Security Breach

📅 - New Gartner (gartner.com) security forecasts predict that through 2005, 20 percent of enterprises will experience a "serious" Internet security incident. According to the Stamford, Connecticut-based research and analysis firm, while the majority of enterprises will not face such attacks, they are advised to take proper precautions because a security breach could potentially be far more costly.

"It takes only one unsecured machine on a network to create potential risk for everyone else," said Richard Hunter, vice-president and fellow at Gartner. "The risks and the costs of defenses are high, and the trend is moving both upward."
Gartner's assessments find that information security's highest vulnerabilities are fundamentally insecure commercial software, inadequate patch update models, and misguided users who believe crime happens to "someone else."
The Gartner security report (ISBN 0-9741571-2-0) is priced at $1,295 and includes 16 chapters of insights, forecasts and recommendations on various important security topics.
