*📜 Plan description
BX11 is the entry Storage Box plan and includes 1 TB of disk space for backups, archives and general file storage at a flat price of 3.2 EUR per month plus VAT. Traffic is unlimited, so regular uploads and restores do not create extra transfer charges, and up to 10 concurrent connections allow several devices or backup jobs to run in parallel. The plan comes with 10 snapshots and 10 automated snapshots that can be scheduled as restore points, and up to 100 sub accounts so that different users or applications can be restricted to their own directories. BX11 can be provisioned in a German or Finnish data center, billing is calculated hourly but capped at the monthly maximum, there is no setup fee and no minimum contract period, so the plan works both for permanent off site backup and short projects.
Storage Box as a product is self managed online storage that behaves like an additional drive on the network. Data is stored on Hetzner infrastructure with RAID based storage backends in German and Finnish data centers and is reachable over secure protocols such as FTP, FTPS, SFTP, SCP, Samba or CIFS, HTTPS and WebDAV. Every Storage Box plan can be upgraded or downgraded without losing data, supports up to 100 sub accounts for fine grained access control and can be addressed by common backup tools including BorgBackup, Restic, Rclone and rsync over SSH. Snapshots and automated snapshots are available across the range so you can roll the entire box back to earlier states if something goes wrong. There is no minimum contract period, cancellation is possible at any time and billing is calculated per hour but limited by a monthly cap, which keeps costs predictable even if the box is only used intensively during short backup windows. Free email support is included and a data processing agreement for GDPR compliant handling of personal data can be generated when you need it.

📄 Editorial Review
Hetzner (founded 1997 by Martin Hetzner in Gunzenhausen, Germany) is one of Europe’s largest data-center operators, running hundreds of thousands of servers and delivering a broad lineup that spans Dedicated Hosting, Cloud Hosting, Shared Web Hosting, Colocation (racks), Storage Boxes, Domains, and SSL certificates. They pair consistent price-to-performance with 24/7 access to qualified data-center technicians and maintain their own high-tech facilities in Nuremberg, Falkenstein/Vogtland (Germany) and Helsinki (Finland), plus cloud/data-center locations in Ashburn, VA and Hillsboro, OR (USA) and Singapore.Shared Hosting (Webhosting)
This is Hetzner’s entry point for classic websites and email. Plans bundle daily backups, SSL, DNS, PHP (5/7/8), MariaDB/PostgreSQL, and developer niceties like cron, Redis object cache, and one-click WordPress. It’s cost-efficient for blogs, portfolios, small business sites and even Webshop setups on higher tiers. Constraints exist on lower plans (e.g., some quotas and add-on fees for external domains), so heavier e-commerce or custom apps should pick larger tiers or move to Cloud/Dedicated when consistent CPU is required.
Cloud Hosting (Hetzner Cloud)
Cloud servers are on modern Intel/AMD (and Ampere Arm64 on newer lines) with fast NVMe and a rich IaaS feature set: Load Balancers, private Networks, stateful Firewalls, Volumes up to 10 TB, Snapshots/Backups, Floating IPs, and an API/CLI. Two pricing families are common: shared-vCPU for best price/performance on moderate workloads, and dedicated-vCPU for sustained CPU needs and low latency. This tier fits scalable web apps, Kubernetes, CI/CD runners, microservices, managed WordPress stacks, and data workloads that benefit from programmatic control. Hourly billing with a monthly cap makes it flexible; remember instances bill until deletion.
Dedicated Hosting (Root Servers)
Bare-metal with Intel or AMD CPUs and SATA/HDD/NVMe options. It’s the right choice when predictable performance, custom kernels, special storage layouts, or consistent high network throughput matter (game servers, busy databases, ML preprocessing, large ecommerce). Customers choose pre-configured models (e.g., AX41-NVMe) or customize. Compared with Cloud, you gain full hardware control and stable performance; you lose per-minute elasticity and must plan capacity ahead.
Colocation (Racks)
For teams that own hardware or need specific appliances, Hetzner provides 1/3 and full racks in ISO 27001:2022-certified parks (Nuremberg, Falkenstein, Helsinki). You bring the servers; they supply redundant power/UPS, cooling, connectivity to major exchanges, 24/7 access, and on-site technicians. Colocation is ideal when compliance, asset ownership, or bespoke architectures (e.g., proprietary storage, specialized accelerators) are non-negotiable, while still benefiting from carrier-grade facilities and renewable-energy operations.
Storage Boxes (Online Backup)
A simple, affordable off-site backup target with flexible access (FTP/SFTP/SCP/rsync, WebDAV/Samba) and Snapshot support. Use it for website/database backups, log archives, or user file sync. Capacity scales up or down without migrations. It pairs naturally with Shared, Cloud, or Dedicated environments to meet retention goals or off-host backup policies.
Internet Domains
Domain registration and management integrated with Hetzner’s DNS Console. This keeps DNS edits, hosting, and infrastructure under one account, reducing operational friction. It’s a convenience layer rather than a unique selling point, but valuable for teams that prefer a single vendor.
SSL Certificates
Commercial SSL options (e.g., Thawte SSL123; DigiCert as the CA partner) complement free certificates when brand recognition, warranty levels, or specific validation requirements matter. This suits stores, customer portals, or enterprises that standardize on paid certs for policy reasons.
Hetzner’s lineup covers the spectrum—from low-cost shared sites to API-driven cloud and bare-metal performance, plus colocation for full control. Shared is the budget starter; Cloud is the flexible workhorse with modern tooling; Dedicated is for deterministic performance; Colocation is for hardware owners; Storage Boxes solve backups cleanly; Domains/SSL round out the stack.
