May 28, 2004 : C&W Acquires Bulldog Communications
📅 - Telecommunications carrier Cable & Wireless (cw.com) announced on Friday that it has purchased UK-based broadband service provider Bulldog Communications for £18.6 million.
Bulldog, established in 2000, delivers broadband through DSL technology. It has installed its own equipment in 38 British Telecom exchanges in central London under "local loop unbundling" regulation. The "local loop" refers to the connection running from a customer's home to the telecom operator's local network/exchange. Regulations put in place by the European Commission are designed to "unbundle" the local loop, over which incumbent telecom providers have had a de facto monopoly.
"Increasingly our customers are demanding broadband DSL. We believe that local loop unbundling will provide selective opportunities driven by customer demand to expand the reach of our services and enable us to provide a differentiated offering," says Francesco Caio, CEO of Cable & Wireless. "The acquisition of Bulldog will accelerate our ability to deliver directly connected DSL solutions for our existing and potential customers with an experienced team specializing in LLU services. Cable & Wireless intends to work with the management of Bulldog to expand the platform as commercial opportunities are identified."
