Dec, 2002 : TruSecure Forecasts Virus Trends in 2003

📅 - Internet security company TruSecure (trusecure.com) announced on Monday that an expert from the company has made forecasts regarding virus and worm outbreaks and trends for the early part of 2003.

Roger Thompson, TruSecure's technical director of malicious code research, reports that 2003 may mark the end of standard mass mailing worms, but that security professionals may want to brace for another attack of the class and level of Code Red.
Thompson predicts an overall increase in remote access Trojans and backdoors, which increased in 2002 but decreased over the past few months.
While mass mailing Win32 viruses were mostly unsuccessful in corporations in 2002, they did occasionally hit corporations that failed to filter properly. While mass-mailing worms will likely have little impact on corporations in 2003, they will likely continue to affect SOHO environments.
Given that the Nimda virus was listed as v0.5, says Thompson, a Nimda v1.0 was a likely threat through 2002. The new virus, he says, is likely to hit during 2003.
And Thompson expects something similar to 2001's most interesting threat, Code Red, which had four versions and two separate code bases. He says another attack in the class and level of Code Red is likely in 2003.
