Dec 31, 2002 : IBM to Release Open-Source Software
📅 - According to reports released last week, computer systems developer IBM plans to release an open-source version of the software behind its upcoming Storage Tank technology in order to encourage broader acceptance of the next-generation storage system.
The company is reportedly working with an open-source group on the software, and will release the code when the product is made generally available in 2003.
The Storage Tank system is a technology designed to get more out of existing storage systems, and make them easier to manage. Storage Tank allows users to link existing systems, allowing larger amounts of data to be stored.
Rather than storing ?metadata,? descriptive information on things like physical locations, file sizes or access permissions, on the storage system itself, as is traditionally the case, Storage Tank spreads that information across a group of metadata servers, using lower-end dual-processor Linux-based machines. The approach allows the system to keep track of a considerably larger number of files. And files of a certain type can be automatically moved to a particular storage pool.
IBM's use of the collaborative, open-source approach, say reports, is the most recent example of the company working to capitalize on the strength of the open-source movement.
