(3*) 🔧 Services: Web HostingDomain Registration
USA.NET was an inactive / migrated hosted messaging company, mainly known for business email hosting, secure webmail and outsourced Microsoft messaging services. The company was founded by John Street in the mid-1990s, with most business profiles placing the start around 1995–1996. It became one of the early names in web-based email and later moved strongly into enterprise hosted messaging.

The company’s core services included Microsoft Hosted Exchange, Commercial Messaging Service (CMS), Net@ddress, mobile email, email archiving, email encryption, spam and virus filtering, content filtering, secure messaging, SharePoint-related collaboration and Office Communications Server / Office Communicator add-ons. Its strongest audience was made up of businesses, financial institutions, franchises, distributed teams and organizations that preferred to outsource email infrastructure instead of maintaining internal mail servers.

USA.NET later became part of Perimeter E-Security, and the standalone USA.NET brand effectively ended on January 31, 2013, when USA.NET and Perimeter E-Security were unified under the SilverSky brand. This made USA.NET more of a migrated legacy brand than a simple failed hosting company. The later business path continued through BAE Systems, which acquired SilverSky in 2014, and then through a management-led SilverSky buyout in 2020.

Historically, USA.NET reached impressive scale. The service was connected with tens of millions of users during its strongest period, while the company grew rapidly from a small Colorado Springs team into a much larger hosted messaging operation. For its time, it was an important specialist in outsourced business email, long before cloud email became the default choice for many companies.

💰 Price & Cost

USA.NET followed a SaaS-style hosted messaging model rather than a classic shared webhosting pricing structure. Services such as CMS and Hosted Exchange were generally priced on a monthly per-user or per-mailbox basis, which made the platform scalable for organizations with changing staff counts.

The commercial value was based on avoiding in-house mail server costs. Customers could reduce spending on Exchange hardware, upgrades, maintenance, backups, spam filtering and specialist administration. Optional services such as wireless email, email archiving, SharePoint, Office Communications Server, secure email and enhanced security features could be added depending on the business setup.

🏢 Data Center

USA.NET’s infrastructure focus was hosted messaging, secure email delivery and managed collaboration services. The platform was built around redundancy, mailbox availability, backup routines, spam and virus protection, webmail access, compliance-oriented security and business continuity.

The company offered a 99.9% uptime SLA, which was one of the key guarantees attached to its hosted messaging services. Hosted Exchange and CMS services were designed to remove single-server dependency from customer environments, giving businesses a managed email platform without the need to run their own Exchange infrastructure.

✍️ Customer Support

Customer support was one of USA.NET’s stronger selling points. Business users had access to 24x7 telephone support, and larger accounts could receive dedicated technical account management. This was especially useful for organizations moving from internal mail servers to outsourced email, where migration, mailbox setup, policy configuration and security requirements needed proper handling.

The company also had experience with regulated and distributed environments, including financial services, franchises, associations and enterprise customers. That made its support model more service-oriented than the simple ticket-only approach often seen in low-cost hosting.

🔨 Control Panel

USA.NET used web-based administration for hosted messaging management. Customers could manage users, mailboxes, branded email services, reporting and account settings through online interfaces.

The CMS platform included brandable webmail, address books, folders, rich message composition, filtering, traffic reporting and administrative visibility. Hosted Exchange users had web access and mailbox management features, with additional collaboration and mobile messaging options available depending on the selected service.

🎯 Conclusion

USA.NET was a credible and historically important hosted email company. Its strengths were business messaging, Hosted Exchange, secure email, archiving, spam and virus filtering, mobile access, 99.9% SLA-backed availability and higher-touch support for organizations that needed dependable outsourced mail services.

Today, USA.NET belongs in the inactive / migrated hosting company category. The brand effectively stopped operating as an independent public hosting provider on January 31, 2013, when it became part of SilverSky. For historical review purposes, USA.NET deserves recognition as an early and serious hosted messaging provider, but it is no longer a current webhosting company for new customers.
