Unlike traditional registries that operated through the ICANN root servers, New.net used an alternative internet root system. Domains purchased through New.net were resolvable either by partnering ISPs who agreed to support their DNS system or through the New.net Domain Decoder browser plug-in, which enabled resolution in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

Over its eight years of commercial activity, New.net built a customer base of more than 25,000 users worldwide. Its clients included individuals, startups, and businesses eager to claim a domain name that better fit their brand or niche. With a growing number of internet users and limited availability in popular TLDs, New.net offered a viable and affordable alternative at the time.
The company emphasized customer support, offering services to help users search for, purchase, renew, and manage their domain names. It strove to provide clarity on how these domains interacted with standard DNS systems and promoted their accessibility via ISPs or browser extensions.
Innovation and Controversy
New.net’s model was not without its challenges. Operating outside ICANN’s official root made its domains dependent on browser plug-ins and ISP cooperation, which limited universal accessibility. Critics argued that alternate root systems could create fragmentation in the global DNS, while supporters saw it as a form of healthy competition and innovation.

New.net ceased operations in 2012, after over a decade of pushing boundaries in domain registry innovation.
