(3*) 🔧 Services: Telecom
Telstra is one of Australia’s largest telecommunications and digital infrastructure groups, with origins reaching back to the Postmaster-General’s Department established in 1901. The business developed from Australia’s government communications system rather than from a conventional privately founded hosting company. Its present corporate structure was reorganized on January 1, 2023, when Telstra Group Limited became the ultimate parent of the Telstra Group. Telstra Limited manages the principal customer-facing telecommunications and technology businesses, Telstra InfraCo operates major passive infrastructure assets, and Telstra International manages international operations.

For web hosting customers, Telstra is no longer a conventional shared hosting provider. Its historical WebHosting service combined website hosting, domain registration and a website builder through Bronze, Silver and Gold packages, while the older Business Online Hosting service included website hosting, a website builder and website statistics. Both belong to Telstra’s legacy hosting portfolio and are closed to new customers, with Business Online customers also unable to upgrade or downgrade their existing service.

The current portfolio is considerably more enterprise-oriented. Telstra Adaptive Cloud covers cloud consulting, public and multi-cloud infrastructure, cloud connectivity, managed services and optimization. Customers can use Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (AWS) through Telstra, combine environments through Telstra Multi Cloud, move selected workloads closer to users through Telstra Edge, and use professional migration and modernization services for more complex cloud projects.

Public and multi-cloud deployments can be managed or self-managed, depending on the customer’s internal technical capabilities. Azure services purchased through Telstra are integrated into Telstra billing, with monthly charges determined by the resources configured and consumed within the Azure environment. AWS deployments can be combined with Telstra networking, managed cloud expertise and Cloud Sight management.

Telstra Cloud Connector is particularly useful for organizations combining private WAN connectivity with public cloud. It connects Telstra Next IP and IP VPN environments directly to AWS and Azure instead of relying entirely on ordinary public Internet paths. Australian cloud connections are available through Equinix SY3 in Sydney and NEXTDC M1 in Melbourne, with bandwidth options ranging from smaller enterprise links through multi-gigabit connections. High availability and geographic redundancy are supported, while bandwidth can be adjusted through self-service management.

Physical infrastructure is another important part of the business. Telstra InfraCo provides Data Centre Colocation, cross-connects, cloud on-ramps, Remote Hands and Network Building Colocation. Network Building Colocation extends hosting infrastructure into more than 100 fixed-network locations throughout Australia, making it particularly useful for ISPs, resellers, telecommunications companies and organizations deploying geographically distributed infrastructure.

Telstra’s former Private Cloud remains available to existing customers but has been closed to new purchases since June 30, 2023. Existing deployments use dedicated physical infrastructure supporting virtual server environments, with administration available through Cloud Sight. New customers instead have access to AWS, Azure, multi-cloud, edge and managed-cloud alternatives.

Telstra expanded its cloud expertise through the acquisition of Versent in November 2023, strengthening AWS consulting and cloud transformation capabilities. Telstra later agreed to sell a 75% stake in the Versent Group while retaining 25%. According to the FY2026 corporate reporting, completion remained subject to regulatory approval and was expected during FY2027.

The Australian website is modern and optimized for current desktop and mobile devices. The main customer interface is in English, while multilingual assistance is available through separate Telstra support channels rather than through complete localized versions of the main Australian website. Commercial prices are normally expressed in AUD, while public-cloud consumption charges depend on the specific cloud resources used.

💰 Price & Cost

Telstra’s present cloud and infrastructure portfolio follows an enterprise pricing model rather than the fixed disk-space and bandwidth packages common with traditional shared hosting. Many infrastructure and colocation services require a quotation, while public-cloud products are billed according to actual resource consumption.

Azure purchased through Telstra is billed monthly according to the resources configured and consumed within the Azure environment. Telstra Cloud Sight is free to register for and use for Telstra customers, while cloud consumption, Cloud Connector and optional management services are charged separately.

Enterprise customers can pay by credit or debit card, direct debit through Telstra Connect, BPAY, telephone payment or Electronic Funds Transfer. Payments can also be made through selected Telstra retail channels or Australia Post, although additional fees can apply to some payment methods.

There is no general shared-hosting-style 30-day money-back guarantee across the current cloud and colocation portfolio. Contractual remedies instead rely mainly on service-specific credits and rebates. The Data Centre Colocation SLA provides a 20% credit on the affected monthly recurring colocation fees if the defined continuous-power service level is missed.

Legacy Telstra Private Cloud includes a separate availability rebate mechanism. A qualifying outage can generate a 5% monthly service-fee rebate for each applicable 30-minute block of excess unavailability, with the total rebate capped at 100% of the monthly service fee.

🏢 Data Center

Telstra InfraCo operates seven Australian data centers located in Wellington, Western Australia; Waymouth, South Australia; Exhibition and Clayton, Victoria; Deakin, Australian Capital Territory; St Leonards, New South Wales; and Woolloongabba, Queensland.

The facilities are carrier-neutral and suitable for enterprise, cloud, government and high-density computing requirements. Infrastructure includes 2N UPS architecture, redundant power systems, advanced cooling, secure rack and cage options, Remote Hands and 24/7 access where applicable. Security controls include CCTV and continuous staffing at many locations, while relevant facilities operate under certifications including ISO 27001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001.

Clayton uses a Tier III design, while the Deakin facility supports Zone 2 through Zone 4 Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.

The St Leonards facility includes three Meet-Me Rooms distributed between separate buildings to improve fibre-path diversity. Power infrastructure includes four 5.7 MW generators together with N+1 generator and cooling redundancy.

Cloud interconnection is available through Megaport (megaport.com) at St Leonards, Clayton, Deakin, Woolloongabba and Waymouth, with other locations considered on request. A Telstra InfraCo Cross Connect is required for these connections and is charged separately.

The formal Data Centre Colocation SLA provides 100% continuous power availability up to and including at least one UPS output board serving the contracted data-center space during a calendar month. This guarantee applies specifically to the defined power service and should not be interpreted as a 100% end-to-end application uptime guarantee. A qualifying power failure results in a 20% service credit on the affected monthly recurring colocation charge.

Environmental service levels also cover prolonged temperature excursions below 18°C or above 28°C.

Telstra’s wider infrastructure footprint extends far beyond these seven Australian colocation facilities. Its international enterprise operation has access to more than 600 owned, managed and partner-operated data centers, more than 30 cable systems and approximately 400,000 km of subsea cable, with network points of presence reaching close to 200 countries and territories. The Australian InfraCo network includes around 250,000 km of fibre and connectivity to more than 100 global data centers.

Network Building Colocation adds secure half-height and full-height rack options across more than 100 Australian fixed-network facilities. These locations provide power and carrier-neutral connectivity close to important network interconnection points.

Telstra Internet Direct provides connection speeds from 50 Mbps through 100 Gbps and access to more than 140 Australian points of presence together with approximately 900 international locations through partner networks. Its Core & Edge network has a 99.95% target availability, while the network core is engineered around 99.995% availability.

Telstra’s Australian wholesale Internet network operates under AS1221, while its international IP backbone uses AS4637.

Existing Telstra Private Cloud deployments have a 99.90% service availability level with 24x7 support. Platform configuration has a Recovery Point Objective of 24 hours, while customers remain responsible for protecting their own virtual-machine data.

✍️ Customer Support

Enterprise customers have access to Telstra Connect for online service management, service monitoring, billing and incident handling, together with telephone and email assistance when direct support is required.

Fault reporting is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Networks and Internet support operates from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Friday AEST, excluding public holidays.

Enterprise customers can contact 1800 730 062 for support and fault assistance, while business customers can use 13 22 53. The general Enterprise contact number is 132 253.

Enterprise email support is available through corporate.sdt@team, while business customers can use business.care@team.

Cloud Connector network activity is monitored 24x7, and Cloud Sight provides support for Azure, AWS, Managed Cloud Services and Cloud Connector. Data-center customers can also use Remote Hands and technical assistance, with additional fees applying to some services.

🔨 Control Panel

The principal cloud management interface is Telstra Cloud Sight, a web-based platform for purchasing, provisioning and administering supported public-cloud services and network connectivity from one place.

Cloud Sight supports Azure from Telstra, AWS from Telstra, Cloud Connector and Telstra Managed Cloud Services. Existing Private Cloud installations can also remain accessible to legacy customers.

The platform provides service provisioning, cloud cost visibility, historical usage information, compliance scoring, user auditing and connectivity management. Customers can create supported Telstra cloud services and administer private cloud connectivity to their Telstra Next IP environment.

Telstra Connect serves as the broader enterprise self-service interface for service inventory, network monitoring, planned maintenance, support cases, incidents and billing.

The retired web-hosting products used Telstra-specific interfaces rather than cPanel or Plesk as the standard management platform. Legacy Business Online services also used the Mission Control environment. For new customers, Cloud Sight and Telstra Connect are the relevant control interfaces.

🎯 Conclusion

Telstra is now much more relevant to enterprise cloud, hybrid infrastructure, network connectivity and colocation than to conventional low-cost web hosting. Its main advantage is the ability to combine Azure or AWS resources, private network connectivity, managed technology services and Australian physical infrastructure under one large telecommunications provider.

The seven Telstra InfraCo data centers, extensive fibre and subsea network, Cloud Connector, Cloud Sight and public-cloud integrations make Telstra especially suitable for Australian enterprises, government organizations, network operators and companies with demanding hybrid-cloud requirements.

The combination of physical colocation, carrier-neutral connectivity and direct cloud on-ramps is particularly useful for organizations running mixed on-premises and public-cloud infrastructure.

Individual website owners, small WordPress users and customers seeking inexpensive cPanel hosting will find Telstra less suitable because the former WebHosting and Business Online products are now legacy services closed to new customers. Enterprise and colocation pricing is also less transparent than at mass-market hosting companies because many configurations require consultation or usage-based billing.

For customers prioritizing resilient Australian infrastructure, private connectivity, multi-cloud integration and enterprise-level support, Telstra offers a broad combination of telecommunications, cloud and physical data-center services.
