The company began in 1996, placed its first server online in late December 1996, and incorporated on January 14, 1997. The business started with four college friends building their own hosting operation, then expanded into domain registration through DomainDiscover in 1999. Since 2021, TierraNet has operated under the ClearHello parent company.

The company is best understood as a practical SMB-oriented provider rather than a large cloud-infrastructure platform.
