📄 Editorial Review
next layer is an independent, owner-managed Austrian Internet service provider and infrastructure specialist founded in 2004. Headquartered in Vienna, the company concentrates on business infrastructure rather than inexpensive consumer hosting. Rene Avi is a co-founder and CTO, while Georg Chytil serves as Managing Director and CFO. The company has six private shareholders: Georg Chytil, Rene Avi, Martin Dirnhofer, Andreas Schoder, Peter Heinrich, and Karola-Margarethe Leitner. The business has developed into a substantial Austrian network, cloud, and data-center operator. Recent company figures include approximately EUR 27.66 million in 2025 sales, around 76 employees, more than 20 years of operation, and an expanding Vienna colocation footprint. LinkedIn places next layer in its 51-200 employee category. The company has received the Austrian National Award and is entitled to use the Austrian Federal Coat of Arms. In the 2025 Austria's Leading Companies competition, next layer ranked first in Vienna and second nationally among medium-sized businesses.
This is not a conventional low-cost shared-hosting company. The portfolio is centered on Network, Cloud, Colocation, Root Servers, managed infrastructure, storage, backup, disaster recovery, Kubernetes, databases, domains, SSL certificates, Hosted Exchange, Nextcloud, VoIP, hardware, and technical consulting. It is therefore considerably better suited to companies, software operators, system integrators, financial organizations, public-sector environments, and other customers requiring professional infrastructure than to someone looking for a basic website-hosting package.
The Network business is one of the company's strongest areas. Internet access is available through dedicated fiber and virtual unbundling, with bandwidth ranging from 10 Mbps to multiple 400 Gbps links. IPv4, IPv6, BGP multihoming, proactive monitoring, DDoS mitigation, and service levels covering latency and packet loss can be integrated into business connections.
Layer 2 Ethernet services scale from 100 Mbps to 400 Gbps and support VLAN transparency, jumbo frames, MPLS, and numerous optical and electrical interfaces. Fibre Channel and wavelength products support storage networking and low-latency point-to-point applications, while site connectivity can interconnect offices, data centers, and international locations.
Cloud Connect creates private, logically separated connectivity to major cloud platforms without routing business traffic over the public Internet. Connections are available to Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and Alibaba Cloud. Usage-based and fixed-price billing models are possible.
Microsoft ExpressRoute connectivity reaches the Austria East and Germany West Central regions and can include BGP, redundant paths, and ExpressRoute Metro configurations. next layer is also a Google Gold Verified Peering Provider, an advantage for organizations that depend heavily on Google services and require predictable network performance.
Remote Peering expands the network to important European Internet exchanges. Customers can reach VIX, DE-CIX, SwissIX (swissix.ch), and AMS-IX without deploying their own hardware at each exchange. The wider European network reaches more than 100 data centers and points of presence across the German-speaking region.
The cloud range is much broader than ordinary VPS hosting. VDCplus uses Apache CloudStack and provides a self-service virtual data center with virtual machines, virtual networking, VLANs, firewalls, storage, snapshots, and API access. Virtual Server configurations support everything from straightforward virtual workloads to redundant and geographically protected environments.
Virtual Server availability ranges from 99% to 99.90%, depending on architecture. Certified facilities in Vienna and Frankfurt are available, with IPv4, IPv6, optional BGP connectivity, and 24/7 infrastructure operation.
The Virtual Data Center service uses VMware infrastructure and vCloud Director for enterprise IaaS. Customers can operate virtual networks, firewalls, load balancing, Microsoft-licensed workloads, and complete virtual environments without building the underlying physical platform themselves.
Managed Kubernetes provides managed Kubernetes clusters across Austrian facilities, including cluster and node administration through self-service tools. A 30-day trial is available, making it practical to test the platform before moving production workloads.
DBaaS adds PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and MongoDB as managed database services. Standard, CPU-optimized, and memory-optimized configurations are available, together with clustered deployments and point-in-time recovery options. Monitoring includes processor utilization, RAM, disk capacity, service availability, and database metrics.
The storage portfolio includes Storage on Demand over iSCSI, NFS, and CIFS, plus S3-compatible object storage. S3 data can remain in Austria, supports multi-site storage, and can be configured for WORM use cases where immutable storage is required.
Cloud Backup is based on Veeam (veeam.com) Cloud Connect and Backup & Replication. It can protect physical servers, virtual machines, and workstations inside ISO 27001-certified Austrian infrastructure. Data is encrypted during transfer, with restoration possible at both file and complete-system level. A 60-day free trial is available.
Disaster Recovery as a Service extends backup into business-continuity infrastructure. Image replication, storage replication, Veeam replication, self-service failover, and recovery targets below 15 minutes can be configured for suitable environments.
The Nextcloud service is particularly attractive for organizations that want file synchronization, collaboration, and office functionality with data maintained under European jurisdiction. Dedicated instances can include backup and secondary-site mirroring. The 30-day free test includes 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 20 GB of system storage, and 100 GB of data storage. There is no automatic renewal, and the test environment is removed when the trial ends.
The dedicated-server equivalent is the Root Server range. These are physical systems with unrestricted operating-system administrator access and secure out-of-band management rather than virtual VPS instances. Small and Large standard configurations are available, together with individually designed systems.
Root Servers include redundant Internet connectivity, IPv4 and IPv6, and a guaranteed 100 Mbps allocation on 1 Gbps network ports in standard configurations. Custom systems can use multiple 10 Gbps links. GPU-equipped systems suitable for AI and high-performance workloads can also be configured.
Operational Management can cover anything from patching and escalation assistance to complete operation of an infrastructure platform. Management can include customer-owned systems, next layer infrastructure, and public-cloud workloads. next layer is an AWS Select Partner and can manage hybrid systems from planning and migration through security, monitoring, patching, and ongoing operations.
The communications and hosted-service portfolio also includes Hosted Exchange, Domains, and SSL Certificates. Hosted Exchange operates on geographically redundant Austrian infrastructure and includes ongoing maintenance and updates.
Domain customers can register and transfer available extensions and administer DNS zones through the company's DNS management system. DNS infrastructure is redundant across separate networks, while international Anycast can be added through RcodeZero. SSL services cover certificate selection, ordering, installation, and maintenance.
Voice over IP includes SIP trunks, Austrian geographical telephone numbers, number portability, and national 05 numbers. Capacity can be expanded channel by channel, while redundant fiber connections can be combined with telephony services where availability is especially important.
Hardware services cover multiplexing equipment, optical transceivers, routers, switches, servers, and storage hardware that can be purchased or rented. Consulting covers Linux, Microsoft systems, virtualization, containers, Kubernetes, server security, networking, and optical measurements.
The website is available in German and English, making the company practical for both Austrian and international business customers. Product billing is primarily in EUR. The company operates strictly in the B2B segment, with its standard contractual conditions intended for companies and professional customers rather than consumers.
Security and compliance are another strength. next layer maintains ISO 27001 certification, undergoes recurring ISMS audits, follows the Austrian ISP industry's applicable Code of Conduct, and holds the Cyber Trust Austria Silver Label.
