MEGA is a privacy-centered cloud storage, backup and communications platform launched on January 19, 2013. Kim Dotcom initiated the service, and Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk created its first release in roughly three months. The platform attracted one million registrations in its first three days. Dotcom resigned as a director during 2013 and ended his remaining association in 2015; MEGA continued as an independently operated cloud company.

By December 31, 2025, more than 338 million accounts had been registered across over 215 countries and territories, and users had uploaded more than 208 billion distinct files. The European audience remained below 45 million monthly active users. Staffing exceeded 200 people in 2023, with remote contributors operating from more than 20 countries. The head office is in Csomád, Hungary, supported by offices in Auckland, New Zealand and Salamanca, Spain.

A corporate restructuring in March 2025 made MEGA Privacy Kft, Hungarian registration Cg. 13-09-239012, the contractual provider of MEGA Cloud and MEGA S4. Corporate reports sometimes translate the same entity as MEGA Privacy LLC. Standalone paid VPN and Pass subscriptions use MEGA Privacy (NZ) Limited, New Zealand company number 9324253, while Cloud or S4 purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play is supplied under MEGA Networks LLC in Delaware. Hungarian law normally governs direct Cloud and S4 accounts; New Zealand law applies to standalone VPN and Pass agreements.

The Auckland office address contains one inconsistency worth checking before postal delivery. The About section places it on Level 15 of Huawei Centre at 120 Albert Street, while the Contact section uses Level 21. The current contact location and existing WHTop company record both support Level 21, which is retained below.

Cloud storage is the central product. Account data uses user-controlled end-to-end encryption, also known as zero-knowledge encryption. Files are encrypted on the customer’s device before upload. Random keys protect individual items, and the account password secures those keys without leaving the device. MEGA consequently cannot decrypt ordinary Cloud files or private conversations. Privacy is strong, but recovery remains the account holder’s responsibility: a lost password requires the recovery key, and losing both can make the data inaccessible. Two-factor authentication strengthens sign-in protection. Published client source code, a technical whitepaper and a vulnerability program paying as much as €10,000 allow independent security review.

Free storage starts at 20 GB. Fixed paid plans range from 200 GB through 20 TB, while Pro Flexi and Business begin at 3 TB and grow with actual consumption. Files and shared links have no size ceiling. Customers can work through the web, Windows, macOS and Linux desktop applications, Android and iOS apps, browser extensions, MEGA CMD and command-line tools for NAS systems.

Secure sharing covers encrypted file and folder links for both registered and unregistered recipients. Shared folders can grant full, read-and-write or read-only permissions. Password-protected links and expiry dates are available to Pro and Business customers, and link analytics counts opens, downloads, plays and views. File requests create a dedicated upload page through which an external client, colleague or student can send encrypted files into a selected Cloud folder without opening an account.

MEGA Sync maintains bidirectional copies: local changes reach the Cloud and Cloud changes return to the computer. It can synchronize an entire Cloud drive or chosen folders, work across multiple computers and filter by file name, size or type. MEGA Backup instead sends changes in one direction from the device to MEGA. Backed-up data is read-only in the Cloud, reducing accidental modification, and the Backup Centre combines real-time status for backups and synchronized folders. Mobile camera uploads protect photos and video.

Version history and Rewind offer recovery from deletion, overwrites and ransomware. Free accounts retain a 30-day history with limited Rewind viewing, while Pro and Business extend coverage to 60 days and enable file restoration. These features do not remove the need for an independent copy. The contract requires customers to maintain copies and excludes any promise that data loss can never occur, making MEGA a useful backup layer rather than a safe justification for keeping only one copy.

MEGA S4 adds S3-compatible object storage for archives, backup repositories, media, static web content, application objects, AI datasets, analytics, research, IoT and logs. Standard S3 tools and SDKs can connect without a proprietary migration method. There is no charge for API calls and no minimum consumption, and capacity can scale into petabytes. S4 access is included with Pro Lite, Pro I, Pro Flexi and Business. Egress is free within a fair-use allowance equal to five times average monthly stored volume; higher transfer can be limited or charged after notice. Annual object durability is 99.999999999%.

S4 does not share the zero-knowledge model used by ordinary MEGA Cloud. Its objects receive server-side encryption, except while temporarily present on S4 cache servers, and MEGA can provide S4 data to authorities where legally required. Customers requiring end-to-end control should encrypt objects before uploading them. The S4 MSP service lets managed-service providers combine the platform with Rclone, MSP360, Arq and other compatible tools for customer backup and archive offerings.

Transfer.it is optimized for one-time browser delivery. It accepts files and collections without a file-size or per-transfer ceiling and can work without registration. Signed-in customers can manage their transfers, while Pro accounts receive Transfer.it Pro with stronger performance and no expiry limits. Its protection differs from Cloud sharing: Transfer.it is not end-to-end encrypted. Files are encrypted while stored, decrypted briefly in memory for download and handled through isolated key-management systems.

MEGA VPN includes unlimited unthrottled traffic, ChaCha20 encryption, automatic connection on untrusted networks, an integrated kill switch and blocking for ads and trackers. One account supports up to ten devices across Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. Server locations span Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and additional markets.

MEGA Pass provides a zero-knowledge vault for passwords and payment cards, with autofill, password generation, synchronized access, CSV imports and one-time-password authentication. It operates in the web account, mobile applications and Chrome, Edge and Firefox extensions. A 30-day trial unlocks the full product, and paid Pro and Business storage includes Pass. The recovery key is essential for account recovery, password changes after lockout and some two-factor-authentication operations.

Chat and Meetings brings encrypted messaging, one-to-one calls, group calls, scheduled meetings and screen sharing into the same account. More than 100 participants can join through a link, and desktop guests require neither registration nor a separate application. Group key rotation prevents new members from seeing earlier content and former members from receiving later messages. Free meetings last up to one hour; paid subscriptions remove the duration limit.

Localization covers English, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Thai, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Turkish. Local currency estimates can be selected, although direct transactions settle in euros.
