MEGA is a privacy-centered cloud storage, backup and communications platform launched on January 19, 2013. Kim Dotcom initiated the service, and Mathias Ortmann and Bram van der Kolk created its first release in roughly three months. The platform attracted one million registrations in its first three days. Dotcom resigned as a director during 2013 and ended his remaining association in 2015; MEGA continued as an independently operated cloud company.

By December 31, 2025, more than 338 million accounts had been registered across over 215 countries and territories, and users had uploaded more than 208 billion distinct files. The European audience remained below 45 million monthly active users. Staffing exceeded 200 people in 2023, with remote contributors operating from more than 20 countries. The head office is in Csomád, Hungary, supported by offices in Auckland, New Zealand and Salamanca, Spain.

A corporate restructuring in March 2025 made MEGA Privacy Kft, Hungarian registration Cg. 13-09-239012, the contractual provider of MEGA Cloud and MEGA S4. Corporate reports sometimes translate the same entity as MEGA Privacy LLC. Standalone paid VPN and Pass subscriptions use MEGA Privacy (NZ) Limited, New Zealand company number 9324253, while Cloud or S4 purchased through the Apple App Store or Google Play is supplied under MEGA Networks LLC in Delaware. Hungarian law normally governs direct Cloud and S4 accounts; New Zealand law applies to standalone VPN and Pass agreements.

The Auckland office address contains one inconsistency worth checking before postal delivery. The About section places it on Level 15 of Huawei Centre at 120 Albert Street, while the Contact section uses Level 21. The current contact location and existing WHTop company record both support Level 21, which is retained below.

Cloud storage is the central product. Account data uses user-controlled end-to-end encryption, also known as zero-knowledge encryption. Files are encrypted on the customer’s device before upload. Random keys protect individual items, and the account password secures those keys without leaving the device. MEGA consequently cannot decrypt ordinary Cloud files or private conversations. Privacy is strong, but recovery remains the account holder’s responsibility: a lost password requires the recovery key, and losing both can make the data inaccessible. Two-factor authentication strengthens sign-in protection. Published client source code, a technical whitepaper and a vulnerability program paying as much as €10,000 allow independent security review.

Free storage starts at 20 GB. Fixed paid plans range from 200 GB through 20 TB, while Pro Flexi and Business begin at 3 TB and grow with actual consumption. Files and shared links have no size ceiling. Customers can work through the web, Windows, macOS and Linux desktop applications, Android and iOS apps, browser extensions, MEGA CMD and command-line tools for NAS systems.

Secure sharing covers encrypted file and folder links for both registered and unregistered recipients. Shared folders can grant full, read-and-write or read-only permissions. Password-protected links and expiry dates are available to Pro and Business customers, and link analytics counts opens, downloads, plays and views. File requests create a dedicated upload page through which an external client, colleague or student can send encrypted files into a selected Cloud folder without opening an account.

MEGA Sync maintains bidirectional copies: local changes reach the Cloud and Cloud changes return to the computer. It can synchronize an entire Cloud drive or chosen folders, work across multiple computers and filter by file name, size or type. MEGA Backup instead sends changes in one direction from the device to MEGA. Backed-up data is read-only in the Cloud, reducing accidental modification, and the Backup Centre combines real-time status for backups and synchronized folders. Mobile camera uploads protect photos and video.

Version history and Rewind offer recovery from deletion, overwrites and ransomware. Free accounts retain a 30-day history with limited Rewind viewing, while Pro and Business extend coverage to 60 days and enable file restoration. These features do not remove the need for an independent copy. The contract requires customers to maintain copies and excludes any promise that data loss can never occur, making MEGA a useful backup layer rather than a safe justification for keeping only one copy.

MEGA S4 adds S3-compatible object storage for archives, backup repositories, media, static web content, application objects, AI datasets, analytics, research, IoT and logs. Standard S3 tools and SDKs can connect without a proprietary migration method. There is no charge for API calls and no minimum consumption, and capacity can scale into petabytes. S4 access is included with Pro Lite, Pro I, Pro Flexi and Business. Egress is free within a fair-use allowance equal to five times average monthly stored volume; higher transfer can be limited or charged after notice. Annual object durability is 99.999999999%.

S4 does not share the zero-knowledge model used by ordinary MEGA Cloud. Its objects receive server-side encryption, except while temporarily present on S4 cache servers, and MEGA can provide S4 data to authorities where legally required. Customers requiring end-to-end control should encrypt objects before uploading them. The S4 MSP service lets managed-service providers combine the platform with Rclone, MSP360, Arq and other compatible tools for customer backup and archive offerings.

Transfer.it is optimized for one-time browser delivery. It accepts files and collections without a file-size or per-transfer ceiling and can work without registration. Signed-in customers can manage their transfers, while Pro accounts receive Transfer.it Pro with stronger performance and no expiry limits. Its protection differs from Cloud sharing: Transfer.it is not end-to-end encrypted. Files are encrypted while stored, decrypted briefly in memory for download and handled through isolated key-management systems.

MEGA VPN includes unlimited unthrottled traffic, ChaCha20 encryption, automatic connection on untrusted networks, an integrated kill switch and blocking for ads and trackers. One account supports up to ten devices across Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. Server locations span Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and additional markets.

MEGA Pass provides a zero-knowledge vault for passwords and payment cards, with autofill, password generation, synchronized access, CSV imports and one-time-password authentication. It operates in the web account, mobile applications and Chrome, Edge and Firefox extensions. A 30-day trial unlocks the full product, and paid Pro and Business storage includes Pass. The recovery key is essential for account recovery, password changes after lockout and some two-factor-authentication operations.

Chat and Meetings brings encrypted messaging, one-to-one calls, group calls, scheduled meetings and screen sharing into the same account. More than 100 participants can join through a link, and desktop guests require neither registration nor a separate application. Group key rotation prevents new members from seeing earlier content and former members from receiving later messages. Free meetings last up to one hour; paid subscriptions remove the duration limit.

Localization covers English, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Thai, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Turkish. Local currency estimates can be selected, although direct transactions settle in euros.

💰 Price & Cost

The permanent free tier includes 20 GB and limited transfer. Each qualifying achievement can add 5 GB for installing a desktop or mobile application, starting a VPN or Pass trial, or referring a new user who installs an app. Achievement storage lasts 365 days and is unavailable to Business and Pro Flexi customers.

Prices use EUR, with local tax added where applicable. Essential is €40 per year before tax for 200 GB of storage and approximately 2.4 TB of annual transfer. Pro Lite includes 750 GB and 1 TB monthly transfer for €4.99 per month or €59.99 per year. Pro I combines 3 TB of storage and 3 TB monthly transfer at €9.99 monthly or €99.99 annually. Pro II supplies 10 TB for storage and monthly transfer at €19.99 monthly or €199.99 annually. Pro III reaches 20 TB for both measures at €29.99 monthly or €299.99 annually. Annual transfer pools for the four Pro tiers are 12 TB, 36 TB, 120 TB and 240 TB respectively.

Pro Flexi has a €15 monthly base before tax, containing 3 TB of storage and 3 TB of transfer. The greater additional storage or transfer consumption costs €3.50 per TB. Business costs €5 per user per month, requires three users and therefore also begins at €15. Its shared base allowance is 3 TB of storage and transfer, followed by the same €3.50 per-TB usage charge. The Business invoice changes with active users and resource consumption.

Standalone VPN is €4.99 monthly, €35.93 for one year or €47.90 for two years before tax. The longer periods reduce its effective rate to €2.99 or approximately €2.00 per month, and a seven-day trial is available. Pass is €2.99 monthly, €21.53 annually or €28.70 for two years, accompanied by a 30-day trial. Paid Pro and Business storage bundles include both products.

The Romanian-localized price request returned RON conversion and 21% tax while retaining EUR settlement. As an example, the €15 net Pro Flexi base became €18.15 after tax. Accepted methods include credit cards, debit cards and Bitcoin; other choices can vary by country.

Refund rights depend on residence. European Union consumers receive a 14-day money-back period, and residents of Brazil or South Korea receive seven days. Purchases elsewhere are ordinarily final unless local law or a particular offer creates another entitlement. An unused accidental purchase should be reported within 24 hours, while an erroneous charge must be challenged within 30 days. Suspension for a contract breach removes refund eligibility.

Recurring plans renew monthly or annually until cancelled before the next billing date. Subscriptions purchased through a mobile store must be cancelled in that store; direct subscriptions are cancelled from the online account. Downgrading to free can restrict access when stored data exceeds the current free allowance, so files should be reduced or exported before the paid term ends.

🏢 Data Center

Primary storage regions include Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and Sweden. These locations are in the European Union or jurisdictions considered adequate under GDPR Article 45. To reduce latency, encrypted temporary copies may be kept in Mongolia for users nearby, but the main copies remain within the primary region list.

CloudRAID divides a file among countries and generates another fragment containing reconstruction information. This N-of-N+1 structure permits retrieval after one part or location becomes unavailable. The transfer engine rebuilds from the first complete set of fragments rather than waiting for the slowest location. CloudRAID facilities operate in Luxembourg, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium and Canada, with Sweden joining the footprint.

The platform maintains availability above 99.9%. This figure is not accompanied by a standard service-credit table. Maintenance and outside interruptions remain possible, the contract supplies services on an "as is" basis, and customers must protect independent copies. S4’s eleven-nines annual durability measures resistance to object loss or corruption and should not be interpreted as uptime.

MEGA operates AS205809, registered to MEGA Privacy Kft on May 30, 2017. The network currently originates 16 IPv4 and 11 IPv6 prefixes. Transit and peering include Arelion (AS1299), Cogent Communications (AS174), NTT (AS2914) and GTT (AS3257). Equinix Barcelona carries a visible 20 Gbps exchange connection. The main web endpoint at 66.203.127.24 is announced by MEGA’s network in Amsterdam.

✍️ Customer Support

Customer service combines an extensive Help Centre with an online support form. Free users receive basic support, while Pro and Business subscriptions include priority service. Specialized mailboxes separate S4, security, privacy, abuse, copyright, legal, media and software-bug requests. S4 customers can use s4@mega, security reports use security@mega, and privacy enquiries use privacy@mega; ordinary account problems enter through the support portal.

Online support is available around the clock. Security researchers can use the vulnerability reward program, with payments reaching €10,000 according to severity and impact. Zero-knowledge encryption sets a firm boundary on assistance: support cannot decrypt Cloud data or recreate a missing recovery key.

An active blog supplements product documentation with current cloud, privacy and security articles. Help coverage extends across storage, transfer, synchronization, backup, Business, VPN, Pass and S4. Dedicated abuse, takedown and copyright channels keep compliance matters separate from technical requests.

🔨 Control Panel

The web application controls Cloud files, folders, shares, contacts, chat, meetings, transfers, billing and account security. Desktop software adds a high-performance transfer manager, selective synchronization, backup setup, conflict resolution and combined Backup Centre status. Mobile applications include Cloud access, camera uploads, chat, meetings, VPN and Pass, while browser extensions support storage workflows and password autofill.

Business administrators receive a dedicated console for adding users, editing profiles, activation and deactivation, storage analytics, password-reset links and transfer of data from disabled members. MEGA CMD offers a scriptable interactive command line for automation and NAS devices, and the API plus published SDK supports custom development. During 2026, MEGA CMD gained support for user-selected AI agents that can operate against account data without abandoning the Cloud encryption design.

S4 uses S3-compatible endpoints, access keys, buckets and IAM-style permissions instead of the standard Cloud file manager. Cloud storage, Business administration, VPN, Pass and S4 therefore share an identity ecosystem but retain different management tools and, in the case of S4, a different encryption model.

🎯 Conclusion

MEGA has grown from an encrypted file service into a broad privacy, storage and collaboration ecosystem. Its strongest features are 20 GB of free capacity, user-held encryption keys, unrestricted file size, strong multi-platform support, detailed sharing controls, version recovery, scalable S3-compatible storage and a large international infrastructure footprint. CloudRAID, an independently operated ASN, more than 338 million registered accounts and over 208 billion uploaded files demonstrate established scale.

The product boundaries are important. Standard Cloud storage and private chat use zero-knowledge encryption; S4 and Transfer.it do not. Availability exceeds 99.9%, but there is no conventional uptime-credit schedule, and the customer remains responsible for separate backups. Refunds are broadly available only where consumer law requires them, direct charges settle in euros, and the combination of a lost password and missing recovery key can permanently block encrypted data.

Individuals, photographers, media professionals and distributed teams that prioritize privacy, large files and synchronization are the clearest fit. Business and Pro Flexi handle variable team capacity, while S4 is appropriate for backups, archives, media libraries, application objects and MSP integrations. Customers seeking managed encryption-key recovery, contractual uptime credits or conventional website hosting with databases and mailboxes require a different type of provider. Within privacy-oriented cloud storage and collaboration, MEGA delivers an unusually complete and technically mature package.
