\MainOne\, now operating as \MainOne, Solutions by Equinix\, is one of West Africa’s most established digital-infrastructure and telecommunications companies. The business dates back to \2008\, when Nigerian telecommunications executive \Funke Opeke\ started the project that ultimately became MainOne. Commercial operations began in \July 2010\ with the activation of its privately funded, open-access submarine cable linking West Africa with Europe.

Over the following years, MainOne expanded far beyond international bandwidth. Its infrastructure developed into a combination of submarine connectivity, terrestrial fiber, enterprise Internet access, cloud services, managed infrastructure, interconnection and data-center services serving businesses throughout West Africa.

A major change came in \2022\, when \\Equinix\\ completed the acquisition of MainOne at an enterprise value of approximately \US$320 million\. MainOne entered the Equinix group with four operational data centers, around 7,000 km of submarine cable infrastructure, more than 1,200 km of terrestrial fiber and approximately 65 Points of Presence across Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Portugal. The company had more than 800 business customers and close to 500 employees at the time of the acquisition.

MainOne's former MDXi data-center operation subsequently became part of the wider Equinix data-center platform. The MainOne brand remains particularly important for \Connectivity, Cloud and Managed Infrastructure Services\ in West Africa. Its customers include enterprises, banks and other financial institutions, telecom operators, Internet service providers, content companies, public-sector organizations and companies requiring dependable regional connectivity.

Founder \Funke Opeke\ remained closely involved with the organization following the acquisition. In \November 2024\, Wole Abu became Managing Director for Equinix West Africa, overseeing operations across Nigeria, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, while Opeke continued in a strategic advisory role.

MainOne is very different from a conventional low-cost web hosting company. Shared Linux hosting, inexpensive WordPress packages and basic retail VPS plans are not the main business. The portfolio instead concentrates on \IP Access, IP Transit, Fast Connect, International Private Leased Circuits, Leased Lines, Dark Fibre, Cloud Connectivity, Colocation, Interconnection, Managed Infrastructure and Cloud services\.

\Enterprise Internet and connectivity\ remain central to MainOne. Businesses can obtain dedicated Internet access, private connectivity, international capacity and corporate network services backed by its regional fiber infrastructure. Fast Connect and leased-line solutions are suitable for organizations that need private links between offices, data centers, cloud platforms or other business locations.

\Dark Fibre\ gives larger organizations and telecommunications customers access to dedicated fiber capacity where they can operate their own transmission equipment and network architecture. This is particularly relevant to high-bandwidth businesses, operators and organizations that want greater control over their network infrastructure.

\Cloud services\ form another important part of the portfolio. MainOne supports enterprise workloads requiring local infrastructure, data sovereignty, private environments and hybrid architectures. Cloud Connectivity can provide private connections between customer infrastructure and cloud resources without depending entirely on the public Internet.

\Colocation\ is particularly strong due to the integration of MainOne's infrastructure with Equinix. Customers can deploy their own servers and networking equipment in professionally managed facilities with redundant power, controlled cooling, fire protection, monitoring, physical security and remote technical assistance. Deployments can range from individual racks and cabinets to cages and larger dedicated areas.

The network remains one of MainOne's most valuable assets. Its international infrastructure was originally built around an approximately \7,000 km submarine cable system connecting West Africa with Europe\, supplemented by extensive terrestrial fiber and regional Points of Presence. This gives the company considerably more infrastructure depth than a conventional hosting provider operating from rented servers.

MainOne also operates its own Internet network under \AS37282 – Main One Cable Company Nigeria Limited\. This autonomous network supports its connectivity, cloud and data-center services and reinforces its role as a genuine telecommunications and infrastructure operator rather than simply a hosting reseller.

The company operates primarily in \English\. Its activities extend across Nigeria, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire, with services tailored mainly to enterprise and infrastructure customers rather than consumers purchasing standardized hosting packages online.
