Hetzner is a privately owned German hosting and infrastructure company established in 1997 by Martin Hetzner. The owner-led business operates primarily through Hetzner Online GmbH in Gunzenhausen, Bavaria, Germany, with Hetzner Finland Oy supporting its Finnish operations. Its development from a small server reseller into one of Europe’s large data-center operators helps explain the breadth of the current platform: low-cost services sit on top of self-operated European facilities, a substantial private network, and an expanding international cloud footprint.

Martin Hetzner initially resold server capacity located in the United States. The company rented its first data-center space in Nuremberg in 2001 and had reached approximately 200,000 hosted domains and 20,000 servers by 2008. Its first company-owned park opened at Falkenstein in 2009. A second park followed in Nuremberg in 2012 on a 40,000-square-meter property designed to accommodate as many as ten data centers; at that point, the operation had about 60,000 servers and 140 employees.

Storage products address several distinct workloads. Storage Box is a protocol-rich remote-storage service with 1 TB, 5 TB, 10 TB, and 20 TB capacities, unlimited traffic, ten simultaneous connections, up to 100 subaccounts, and between ten and forty snapshots. It accepts FTP, FTPS, SFTP, SCP, Samba, BorgBackup, Restic, Rclone, rsync, HTTPS, and WebDAV. Customers can place a box in Germany or Finland, making it useful for server backups, file exchange, and application archives.

Storage Share is a managed Nextcloud environment in Germany. Its 1 TB, 5 TB, and 10 TB configurations allow three, seven, or ten subdomains, unlimited users, and plan-specific simultaneous-connection limits of 50, 100, or 200. It includes groups, quotas, application support, SSL, a RAID-based backend, and several backups each day. Object Storage instead provides an S3-compatible interface for applications, analytics, backup, archiving, and digital assets. A customer can create up to 100 buckets, each holding as much as 100 TB, with object locking, object expiry, versioning, pre-signed URLs, and optional server-side encryption. Object Storage runs in Nuremberg, Falkenstein, and Helsinki.

Free authoritative DNS management is available through a graphical console and API, normally with up to 25 zones. Supported records include A, AAAA, CAA, CNAME, DS, HINFO, HTTPS, MX, NS, PTR, RP, SOA, SRV, SVCB, TLSA, and TXT. DNSSEC remains unavailable, which is a genuine limitation for organizations that require signed zones. SSL products come through DigiCert and the Thawte certificate family. The selection covers domain validation, organization validation, wildcard certificates, and extended validation, permits as many as ten SAN entries, and uses one-year terms.
