Dominios.es is Spain's official registry service for Internet domain names under the .es country-code top-level domain. It is operated by Red.es (red.es), a public business entity of the Government of Spain responsible for assigning and administering .es domain names within Spain's regulatory framework.

The Spanish namespace dates back to 1989, when the .es country-code extension was created and initially managed through RedIRIS. It has since developed into one of Europe's substantial national domain namespaces. On August 6, 2026, there were 2,226,598 registered Dominios.es, compared with 2,147,193 registrations at the end of 2025 and 2,094,772 at the end of 2024. During 2025 alone, 417,126 new registrations were processed.

The available namespace includes .es, .com.es, .nom.es, .org.es, .edu.es and .gob.es. Standard .es, .com.es, .nom.es and .org.es registrations can normally be assigned automatically when the requested name is available and complies with the registration rules. The .edu.es and .gob.es categories require prior verification because they are reserved respectively for educational or research organizations and Spanish public-sector bodies.

Individuals and legal entities with interests or links to Spain can register .es domains. The namespace supports internationalized characters including á, é, í, ó, ú, ü, ñ, ç and l·l, making it well adapted to Spanish and other languages used within Spain.

Most customers register their domains through accredited registrars rather than directly through Dominios.es. At the end of 2025, 107 accredited registrars managed 99.64% of active domains. These companies handle the commercial relationship with customers and often combine .es registration with web hosting, professional email, SSL certificates, website builders, DNS services and other products.

The registrar market is relatively diversified. At the end of 2024, IONOS managed 369,895 .es domains, followed by Arsys with 186,169, SCIP with 145,788, REGISTRAR.EU with 124,691, Acens with 120,584, GoDaddy with 113,525, Dinahosting with 110,172 and OVH Hispano with 102,525. Other important registrars included PiensaSolutions, TecnoCrática, Nominalia and CDmon. These figures are from December 2024 and serve as an indication of the structure of the Spanish registrar market rather than a precise 2026 ranking.

Dominios.es also provides several registry-level services beyond basic domain assignment. These include DNSSEC, WHOIS access over port 43, public registry information through RISP/Open Data, cybersecurity cooperation against phishing and electronic fraud, procedures for reporting potentially fraudulent domains and an extrajudicial Dispute Resolution Policy.

Port 43 WHOIS access is controlled through registered IP addresses and is limited to ten queries per minute. Exceeding this threshold results in a temporary two-hour block, helping protect registry resources against automated abuse.

Security is a significant part of the registry operation. Dominios.es operates within an environment certified under ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and Spain's National Security Scheme (ENS). Its amaIA system uses artificial intelligence and machine-learning techniques to identify suspicious registrations. During the latest reported period, the system analyzed more than 545,000 domains, generated around 4,000 alerts per month and contributed to the cancellation or blocking of approximately 450 malicious domains.

Red.es also completed a dedicated cyberattack simulation involving the Dominios.es registry in July 2026, adding operational incident-response testing to the technical security controls already protecting the namespace.

The service is available in Spanish, English, Catalan, Galician and Basque, providing unusually broad localization for a national domain registry.
