Cloudinary is a specialized cloud media management and delivery platform, not a traditional web host with shared cPanel plans or VPS servers. Founded in 2012 by developers Itai Lahan, Tal Lev-Ami, and Nadav Soferman, the company focuses on solving one problem very deeply: hosting, transforming, optimizing, and delivering images, videos, and other rich media at scale for websites and applications.

Instead of classic "web hosting" packages, Cloudinary offers a platform built around API-driven products:

Image & Video APIs (Programmable Media) – core services that let developers upload, store, transform, and deliver media through REST APIs and SDKs. Typical use cases include resizing, cropping, format conversion, adaptive bitrate streaming, subtitles, overlays, and AI-based enhancements.
Digital Asset Management (Cloudinary Assets / DAM) – a higher-level product aimed at marketing, creative, and content teams. From a hosting buyer’s perspective, Cloudinary effectively acts as a specialized media CDN and object storage layer that plugs into existing web or application hosting. Websites and apps typically keep their HTML, database, and business logic on a general-purpose host, but offload all heavy image and video handling to Cloudinary’s platform. This approach is particularly attractive for e-commerce, media, SaaS, and high-traffic sites where page speed, media quality, and automation matter more than generic "disk space + bandwidth" totals.

Cloudinary’s positioning is therefore very different from commodity shared hosting. There are no classic Linux or Windows shared accounts, no domain registration, and no email hosting.
