BIT.nl is a Dutch business ISP, hosting, cloud and data center provider headquartered in Ede, Netherlands. The company started on January 1, 1996, under the original name Business Internet Trends VOF, founded by Henk van Beek and Michel van Osenbruggen. BIT became a BV in 2000, and the BIT B.V. name became official in 2003. Alex Bik, later known as CTO, was the company’s first employee and became one of the key technical figures behind BIT’s infrastructure profile.

BIT is not a mass-market budget hosting provider. Their profile is closer to a Dutch infrastructure partner for organizations that care about uptime, Dutch data location, privacy, security, network quality and direct engineering competence. For smaller web projects, BIT offers Linux shared hosting on Apache with support for PHP, Zend Framework, Sendmail and ImageMagick. The shared hosting environment also includes server aliases / host headers, access to logs and website statistics without sharing visitor data with third parties. This gives their shared hosting a more privacy-conscious and infrastructure-oriented profile than many low-cost retail hosting plans.

For heavier workloads, BIT’s stronger fit is managed hosting, cloud, virtual data center and colocation. Managed hosting can include hardware procurement, installation, operating system configuration, updates, monitoring, backup, storage and virtual servers. Their engineers work with both *nix and Windows environments and apply modern internet standards such as TLS, HSTS, DNSSEC, SPF, DKIM, DMARC and DANE TLSA.

The cloud portfolio is built around BIT NL Cloud, a Dutch-sovereign cloud environment for companies that want infrastructure hosted under Dutch jurisdiction. It includes public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud, virtual machines and virtual data center resources. Virtual machines use high-availability failover technology, while VM storage is spread over three separate storage systems in geographically separated data centers. Virtual Data Centre customers receive dedicated CPU, RAM and storage resources, managed through a portal and scaled according to use.

BIT also has several specialized services that go beyond ordinary hosting. Hosted Nextcloud is available as a managed collaboration and file-sharing environment hosted in BIT’s own Dutch data centers, with BIT also active as a Nextcloud Gold Partner. GPU Hosting gives customers access to dedicated NVIDIA Tesla V100 16GB GPUs for AI, machine learning, data science and rendering workloads. Their private Jitsi-based video conferencing service is hosted in Dutch ISO-certified data centers, which makes it suitable for organizations handling sensitive communications.
