Feb 16, 2004 : Mainsoft Eyed in Microsoft Code Leak
📅 - The Windows Server 2000 operating system source code leaked illegally on the Internet last week may have come from Mainsoft (mainsoft.com), a strategic software partner of Microsoft (microsoft.com), according to a reported published Friday on internetnews.com.
The leaked code, which included 30,915 files, was reportedly taken from a Linux machine used by San Jose-based Mainsoft. Microsoft revealed last week that portions of the source code for the Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 operating systems had been leaked. Microsoft said it was investigating the matter, but stressed that it was not the result of an internal security breach. An estimated 500,000 developers have access to at least part of Microsoft's closely guarded source code, making that community a possible source of the leak. Several analysts speculate that the code could help hackers exploit potential vulnerabilities in the Windows 2000 and NT4 systems.
