📅 March 9, 2004 - The corporate Web site of The SCO Group (sco.com) came back online late last Friday after being offline for over a month, according to a report yesterday by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com).

SCO took its site offline as a result of the MyDoom virus, which was programmed to launch a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against sco.com from infected computers on February 1, 2004. The virus launched the attack as scheduled, overloading the site's servers with requests and successfully bringing the site down. The virus writers programmed MyDoom to end on February 12, but additional variants of the virus continued the attack, and the company moved its site temporarily to thescogroup.com
Netcraft said that since the site went back online, there has been only one brief outage.
The MyDoom virus, considered to be the worst virus of all time, also spawned a second variant programmed to launch a DDoS attack against Microsoft's corporate Web site. Reports indicated that Microsoft (microsoft.com) was affected, but the site was never taken offline.
Both Microsoft and the SCO Group have adversarial relationships with the open source community.

📅 Mar 8, 2004 - HP to Unveil Slimmer Blade Servers - Hewlett-Packard (hp.com) is set to unveil a new line of blade servers on Monday, several reports say. The new servers, the BL30p, will be the smallest yet in HP's BL line of blade servers. Blade servers are much smaller and "thinned-down" server systems that fit in a chassis that provides power and network connections shared by all the blades. The BL30p, set to ship in June, is powered by Intel Xeon processors and supports both Windows and Linux. As many as 16 systems are able to fit in a chassis 10.5 inches tall. HP has not yet provided pricing or specifications.

📅 Mar 8, 2004 - Invotion Raises $3M to Fund Expansion - Invotion (invotion.com -> closed-2025-hosting.com), a Web hosting provider based in Louisville, Kentucky, received $3 million in funding last month from Nashville, Tennessee-based Harbinger Mezzanine Partners LP, according to a report published in MSNBC. Invotion plans to use the capital to double the size of its data center facility and expand the company's overall operations, the report said.
