May 14, 2004 : SpamCop Restraining Order Lifted

📅 - According to a report in the Register, a temporary restraining order against spam reporting organization SpamCop (spamcop.com) has been lifted.

The restraining order stems from legal action bulk emailer OptInRealBig (optinbig.com) brought against SpamCop and its parent company IronPort (ironport.com). The company alleges that SpamCop interfered with its contracts and business relationships, negatively affected its business and bad-mouthed the company. The order prevented SpamCop from forwarding complaints to Internet service providers against OptInRealBig. However, according to the report, the order was only granted because SpamCop papers opposing the application were handed in late.
SpamCop contacts the abuse desks of Internet service providers in response to user reports of spam.
Anit-spam organization Spamhaus (spamhaus.org) has named OptInRealBig as the ninth worst spammer in the world. The company is also the target of legal action from Microsoft and the New York Attorney General.
