Last month Qwest Communications lost out in its attempt to purchase MCI when Verizon made a successful bid to acquire MCI in a deal worth $6.7 billion. Just over a week later Qwest submitted its revised acquisition offer.
Experts speculate that Qwest intensified its efforts to acquire MCI because the company is afraid that it will not be able to remain independent as the telecom industry continues to consolidate. There have also been reports of dissatisfaction from large MCI shareholders, who felt the Verizon offer was too low.
Qwest is in poor financial shape, with $17.2 billion in debt.
MCI operates one of the largest Internet backbones in the world and is a significant player in Web hosting, particularly in the enterprise space. According to research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), MCI is the world's ninth largest host, home to 878,000 hostnames.
