Sphera to Participate in LayerOne Optical Interconnect Platform trial
📅 - LayerOne Inc. (layerone.com), a provider of optical transport exchange technology, announced on Tuesday that Sphera Optical Networks Inc. (sphera.com), a high-capacity metropolitan network provider, will be among the first network providers to participate in trials of LayerOne's new optical interconnection platform. Layerone is currently deploying intelligent optical switches in its NEXUS Optical Distribution Exchanges to aggregate optical networks and groom circuts from 10 Gbps down to 10 Mbps Ethernet. Connecting Sphera's metro network with LayerOne's optical interconnection solution is expected to reduce provisioning intervals between network providers by creating optical network interconnection hubs in major metropolitan centers. According to Sphera, LayerOne's new platform promises to cut service intervals by deploying new optical switches that will resolve many of the bottlenecks of network interconnection. LayerOne says its exchanges are the answer for service providers looking to bridge the gap between metro and long-haul networks. The company says its new platform will eventually allow Sphera to connect its network to any service provider that participates in a LayerOne exchange, and to groom circuits to customer specs in a matter of hours.
