Apr, 2001 : BBC Technology to Employ Intel Online Services

📅 April 26, 2001 - Global Web services provider, and wholly owned subsidiary of Intel Corporation, Intel Online Services Inc. (intelonlineservics.com) announced on Thursday that it will provide colocation services to BBC Technology, a commercial subsidiary of the BBC, for the delivery of the BBC's streaming media services to business clients.
Intel Online Services says its colocation services provide customers with the network connections and flexible hardware options that help to create a secure environment for hosting e-business applications. The company says this level of service is particularly important for companies like BBC Technology that deal with the digital transmission of rich media. BBC Technology will use the Intel Online Services data center near Reading in the UK to host its streaming media services.
According to Intel Online Services, the delivery of video over the Internet places heavy demands on a hosting provider, requiring backup power, redundancy, and multiple connections to ensure that media streams can be maintained at all times.
BBC Technology says that Intel Online Services? data center will give the company the ability to double its capacity, and provide service to its commercial customers. In addition to the colocation services, BBC Technology has also purchased some of Intel's streaming media assets from the former Internet Media Services. The added purchase will allow BBC Technology to further increase its streaming media capacity.
