Feb 8, 2006 : Google Pulls Ricoh Ranking

📅 - Search engine giant Google (google.com) handed down its most severe punishment for the second time in a week, assigning the German Web site for office equipment company Ricoh the crippling "zero" page rank.

The move follows a decision earlier in the week to drop BMW's Web site from Google search results, a punishment many refer to as Google's "death penalty" because of its crippling impact on a company's Internet presence.

Google's string of punishments has sparked debate among analysts and Web users, some of whom applaud the company's commitment to keeping its search results honest, and some of whom feel the companies are being punished unfairly for making Google's system work for them.

Ricoh said it is looking into the issues with its German Web site, since other Ricoh Web sites in Europe have remained compliant with Google standards. The company says it expects the German site to be compliant soon.

Google's rules, which state that the search engine may ban any Web site attempting to manipulate search results or mislead users, also says the Web site may be reinstated after it is found to be compliant.
