"In the planning stages of SoftLayer, we started with a long list of customer driven requirements and worked backwards in designing and building a system unlike any other," says Ric Moseley, VP of engineering. "The addition of SAVVIS helps us continue toward that goal."

SAVVIS feeds SoftLayer's public network, thanks to its GigE handoff connection from its Equinix facility in the INFOMART. The tier-one network enables redundancies with multi-homed gigabit backbone connections and IDS, IPS, and DDOS mitigation systems. The company's second distinct routed network, the Private network, helps connect servers to one another.

The service network within SoftLayer's Private network provides a direct, secure path to private services such as NAS, FTP, DNS, provisioning, monitoring, OS updates and graphing. Customers can access their back-end VLAN and manage servers out of band using a separate carrier connected to the SSL VPN gateway.

SoftLayer Technologies launched its services in the last week of January, 2006.
