May 23, 2006 : ICM Registry Appeals, Sues
📅 - According to reports released Friday, the ICM Registry (icmregistry.com) filed a lawsuit against the US government last week in an effort to gain access to information related to its recently rejected bid to establish a .xxx domain registry.
The ICM Registry says the information it is after was withheld in a Freedom of Information Act request made in October. The company says it wants to demonstrate that the US government intervened in the approval process for the .xxx domain, which was rejected finally by ICANN's board this month.
The company wants to prove that the US Commerce Department lobbied against the formation of the .XXX registry, which would contradict the groups public statements that it plays no role in the day-to-day running of the Internet.
Last year, ICANN appeared to be moving forward with approval for the .xxx registry, but pulled back on its plans after the Commerce Department, facing some opposition to the project, requested that the application be reviewed further.
ICM has also filed a reconsideration request with ICANN, claiming that the board voted based on inaccurate information. The request will be reviewed by ICANN board members.
