Aug 2, 2006 : Spaces, Blogger See Rapid Growth

📅 - Rapid growth at Microsoft's Windows Live Spaces and Google's Blogger service drove big increases in the Web hosting business, according to the August 2006 Web Server Survey from Internet researcher Netcraft (netcraft.com).

According to Netcraft's most recent data, Live Spaces, formerly known as MSN Spaces, grew by 858,000 sites, while Blogger added 568,000 new sites.

The big gains enabled the blogging services of Microsoft and Google to outpace the world's biggest Web hosting companies for growth. Go Daddy and 1&1 Internet, however, continued to grow quickly with increased account sizes and lowered prices. Go Daddy added 368,000 hostnames this month, while 1&1 added 264,000.

Netcraft says the August 2006 survey received responses from 92,615,362 sites, an increase of 4.4 million sites over the July survey - the biggest numerical increase from month to month since the survey began. The biggest percentage growth was in March 2003.

The rapid growth at the big companies impacted Web server market share, since Microsoft blogs and Go Daddy's parked domains are hosted on Windows Server 2003, while Google's blogs and most of 1&1 Internet's sites are hosted on Linux and Apache. The Microsoft platforms gained market share this month in both hostnames and active sites.
