Oct 13, 2006 : Spamhaus Sends Shutdown Warning
📅 - Anti-spam group Spamhaus Project (spamhaus.org) announced on Thursday that more junk email could be on the way as it prepares to lose its domain name as a result of a lawsuit from e360 Insight (e360insight.com), a company Spamhaus has accused of sending spam.
Spamhaus expects a federal judge in Chicago will sign an order on Monday that will suspend the domain spamhaus.org because the group has refused to recognize the US court and the $11.7 million lawsuit e360 Insight filed after being sited on Spamhaus' blacklist.
Because of the uncertainty of whether US courts have jurisdiction over the situation, Spamhaus says its not clear whether the judge can easily order the domain name suspension because the domain name system is in the hands of organizations that are not parties to the lawsuit.
However, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers says that it cannot comply with any order requiring it to suspend Spamhaus.org or any specific domain name because ICANN does not have either the ability or the authority to do so.
Spamhaus warns the order could unleash up to 50 billion junk emails a day on computer users worldwide, though legal and technology experts are skeptical the effect would lead to millions of clogged inboxes. Experts say it is unlikely people would suddenly see much more junk mail and a suspension at most would provide a hiccup Web-savvy systems administrators could easily work around.
