IANA Transition Moves Ahead According to Plan Despite Opposition
📅 - Over the weekend, Ted Cruz and other Republicans rallied against the transfer of Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) over to ICANN, but ultimately, the transfer will move ahead according to plan.
The U.S. Department of Commerce and ICANN were bound by a contract that expired over the weekend, turning over IANA functions and duties to ICANN in the process. Republicans like Cruz opposed the transition vehemently, but were unable to stop the transfer from moving ahead.

Even though there were many bids to block the transition, it happened, anyway.
The change to ICANN in charge of the internet means a move away from governmental control of the internet. The power goes back to a non-profit organization and internet users are not expected to be impacted by the transition.
