Mar, 2009 : Intrust Bank to Build Kansas Data Center

📅 - Financial institution Intrust Bank (intrustbank.com) announced this week it will build a new data center later this year in Newton, Kansas, according to a report by Wichita Business Journal.

A few other banking institutions have recently announced plans of their own to build data centers.

In November, HSBC announced it would build a new £300 million data center in York, UK,

IBM announced in September it would help Saigon Commercial Bank to establish a scalable green data center, Bank of America announced last June it would expand its data center in Platte County, Kansas.

The company has acquired a lot in a city-owned industrial park for the 9,500-square-foot facility.

The building will house servers that are used by the bank every night to back up data from the bank's branches, says Bank spokeswoman Diane Iseman.

Despite the daily activity, the data center will not be staffed full time, says Iseman.

Intrust Bank currently has a data center located at one of its east Wichita branches, but the equipment is quickly outgrowing the data center space, says Iseman.

Additionally, the facility was not designed to withstand a natural disaster such as a large tornado, which could potentially erase data from both its downtown headquarters and the backup site.

Intrust took its cue from watching other banks respond after Hurricane Katrina, and realized that its new data center ought to to be located "far enough away from the main branch," says Iseman.

The bank ancitipates the data center to begin construction in the third quarter.

Dwayne Rumsey has been hired as the project's architect, however, the bank has not yet hired a contractor.
