Mar, 2009 : StatsCan Opens Regional Data Center at SFU

📅 - Canadian statistical agency Statistics Canada (statcan.gc.ca/) announced on Thursday that it has opened a new branch of the Stats Canada Regional Data Centre at the Simon Fraser University Burnaby campus, according to the SFU website.

Located on the third floor of Blusson Hall, the highly secure data center is only open to faculty and students whose projects are approved to use selected Statistics Canada confidential data on households, populations and workplace files.

The data includes The Canadian Community Health Survey, Ethnic Diversity Survey, General Social Survey, Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada, National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth, National Population Health Survey, Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics, Workplace and Employee Survey, and Youth in Transition Survey and the Programme for International Student Assessments.

Individuals for approved projects can also arrange to access confidential data from other Statistics Canada surveys.

As an extension of Statistics Canada offices, the data center branch has a full-time Statistics Canada employee on site to screen data and ensure compliance with confidentiality policies and procedures.

The centre has the same security provisions as any of Statistics Canada offices, including the use of physical access controls and stand-alone computers with no links outside Statistics Canada.

All researchers whose projects are approved will have to undergo a security check before being sworn in under the Statistics Act as "deemed employees," according to the Statistics Canada website.

Additionally, all data that is physically removed from secure areas will be carefully screened by Statistics Canada employees for confidential data.
