Feb 20, 2009 : VMware Sets Web Server World Record

📅 - Virtualization solutions provider VMware (vmware.com) has set a world record in web server performance on a Hewlett-Packard (hp.com) 16-core server with results submitted for Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation (spec.org) consortium's SPECweb2005, a benchmark for evaluating the performance of web servers.

Non-profit organization SPEC was formed to establish, maintain and endorse a standardized set of relevant benchmarks that can be applied to the newest generation of high-performance computers. The SPECweb2005 workload benchmark is designed to be the most objective and representative benchmark for measuring a system's ability to act as a web server.

Most significantly, VMware's HP ProLiant DL585 G5 equipped with VMware ESX Server 3.5 scored 44,000 on the SPECweb2005 test, higher than any 16-core system has ever recorded.

Also, VMware Infrastructure 3 competed head-to-head with a similarly configured unvirtualized server, resulting in VMware's virtualization platform exceeding any number recorded on any physical machine in some cases. This demonstrates that virtualized environments can run applications with performance that is equal to or better than native systems.

"This new high water mark with web server performance is another demonstration of VMware's leadership in virtualizing all types of mission-critical applications," VMware chief technology officer Stephen Herrod said in a statement. "By achieving numbers that exceed anything ever published on hardware of the same core count, VMware Infrastructure proves once again that it can meet the most extreme performance needs of business applications."

VMware's SPECweb2005 results were submitted on January 28, 2009 and accepted on February 12, 2008, and are available online on the SPEC website.

Last month, Fujitsu Siemens Computers' (fujitsu-siemens.com) Primergy RX600 rack server claimed top spot as the fastest web server on Earth, however, VMware's submission scored higher.
