Feb 23, 2009 : Intel Plans Cloud Computing Gear

ibm.com logo📅 - With Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and others clamoring to get on the cloud computing bandwagon, Intel Corporation (intel.com) has announced a new initiative to optimize its Nehalem server line for the cloud, aimed for deployment in large-scale data centers, according to a Computer World report.

After unveiling hardware and software updates last week to help low-range and midrange servers share workloads effectively when cloud application demand spikes, Intel high density computing general manager Jason Waxman told Computer World this will not only provide the scalability necessary for cloud-computing, but also increase energy savings.

According to its announcement, Intel will be contributing $7 billion over the next two years to build advanced manufacturing facilities in the US to build faster, smaller chips that consume less energy. This commitment represents Intel's largest-ever investment for a new manufacturing process. It will be used to build its incredibly small, 32 nanometer (about one millionth of an inch) chip circuitry .

In addition to providing servers that deliver efficient cloud services, Intel wants the servers to be power-efficient.

According to Computer World, Intel is working on a cloud computing motherboard that consumes 85 watts in idle, compared to 115 watts for standard Nehalem-based boards, which, if deployed on 50,000 servers in a data center, could save up to $8 million in three years. These motherboards are due for release this quarter, and will be available through partners like Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM.

In October 2008, IBM (ibm.com) and Intel extended their collaboration in the blade server market to drive adoption of an "open industry specification for blade switches," enabling switch vendors to make products to a standardized design for blade switches, which channel server data, serving an essential role in every blade system.
