Feb 12, 2009 : NTT Supports IWF's Safer Internet Day

📅 - Managed hosting provider NTT Europe Online (ntt.eu) has announced its support for the Internet Watch Foundation (iwf.org.uk), to help combat illegal online material and raise awareness of the issue on Safer Internet Day, February 10.

Along with the main social networking sites across Europe, NTT Europe Online has signed on to fight illegal online content, according to the Thursday announcement by NTT Europe Online, a subsidiary of giant telecom NTT Communications. Organizations signing the agreement will commit themselves to "maximiz[ing] the benefits of the internet while managing the potential risks to children and young people," according to the IWF.

Formed in 1996, and funded by the EU and corporate sponsors, the IWF is a regulatory body made up of Internet service providers, mobile operators, manufacturers and content service providers, as well as police and government agencies. It operates an Internet 'Hotline' in the UK for the public and IT professionals to report their exposure to potentially illegal online content such as sexual abuse images and racial hatred content.

According to IWF statistics, three out of five European parents are worried that their child might become a victim of online grooming and 54 percent are worried that their children could be bullied online.

In April 2008, the IWF released its annual report that revealed that child abuse websites based in the UK are rare, and that it has identified a core of 2,755 foreign-hosted abuse sites that are likely responsible for the majority of images obtained by UK pedophiles.

NTT Europe Online is a global provider of managed hosting solutions to a range of internationally-renowned clients, including UEFA, Aviva and Nissan, and whose parent company NTT Communications' global network delivers a third of all web traffic across the world.

"As a global managed hosting provider the security and reliability of the Internet is of paramount importance to our organisation and to the businesses we work with everyday," Commenting on the partnership, NTT Europe Online president Kazuhiro Nishihata said in a statement. "NTT Europe Online remains dedicated to improving the performance of the Internet for its customers and we are proud to support the IWF's important work towards creating a safer and more trustworthy online experience for all."

Beyond Europe, dozens of countries participated in Safer Internet Day. For instance, the US and Canada participated in blogathon campaigns, and organizations helped convey IWF's message including i-SAFE (isafe.org) and cyberbullying.ca (cyberbullying.ca).
