Dec 19, 2008 : EvoSwitch Ups Energy Savings By 40%
📅 - Dutch green data center operator EvoSwitch (evoswitch.com) announced on Thursday it has managed to reduce the average Power Usage Effectiveness of the data center from 1.8 to 1.6, resulting in a 20 percent increase in energy saving compared to a traditional data center.EvoSwitch says it is striving towards an ultimate goal of achieving 70 to 80 percent in energy savings.
The 20 percent energy saving increase can largely be attributed to EvoSwitch's further investments in low-energy equipment and control systems, as well as the expansion of the data center in 2008, says the company.
Completed in April 2007, the first phase of EvoSwitch, which spans 6,560 square feet, is already fully occupied by equipment from customers.
Additionally, 6,560 square feet of the second phase is almost fully used. Completed this spring, the expansion required an additional investment of 9 million Euros, and when the next phases are completed, EvoSwitch says it will have a potential floor area capacity of more than 29,520 square feet.
"The extra energy saving is in line with what we calculated beforehand," says Laurens Rosenthal, innovation director of EvoSwitch. "An average PUE of 1.6 is low, but the new design of the next phases enables us to achieve an even lower PUE. After completion of the next phases a PUE of 1.2 to 1.3 is a very realistic objective. According to our calculations, an energy saving will be realized in the new phase, in phase 3, of 70 to 80 percent compared to a traditional data cente
According to the press release, the company is using the energy savings towards funding the "current and new investments in green technologies, but also to offer customers affordable energy prices."
EvoSwitch's design team worked with TNO (tno.nl), who gave the company expert advice on how to implement an energy-low concept at the opening of the data center in April 2007.
The design is based on free cooling, which uses the outside temperature to cool the interior; cold corridors, which separates warm and cold air flows; and UPS technology with Delta Conversion.
In October, LeaseWeb managing director Con Zwinkels discussed in an email interview the company's green practices through the EvoSwitch data center.
The company says it is currently "putting the final touches" on a new design that will improve the PUE even further, resulting in lower capital costs and operating costs. This, in turn, will benefit both the environment and EvoSwitch customers.
Last month, LeaseWeb announced it had more than doubled the capacity of its hosting network at EvoSwitch from 210Gbps to 500Gbps, to meet the increased bandwidth demand from existing and new customers.
