Dec 10, 2008 : HickoryTech Opens MN Facility

📅 - Telecommunications provider HickoryTech (hickorytech.com) announced on Monday it has opened a data center in downtown Mankato, Minnesota, designed to host businesses' data, off-site storage, disaster recovery servers and networking equipment.

The Mankato facility marks HickoryTech's second data center and colocation facility, complementing the company's tier 2 data center in Minneapolis suburb, Edina.

The 2,000 square foot facility features raised floor space, cooling, fire suppression and dedicated UPS with generator back-up. Customers can rent dedicated floor space, full secured cabinets, or fractional rack space.

The data center, which the company describes as a "secure, environmentally controlled and monitored facility," is configured with secured 45U cabinets and offers a range of customizable configurations for business customers.

The Twin Cities area has been a popular location for data center builds, with several data centers announced this year alone. In April, managed hosting provider VISI announced itsĀ $18 million tier 3 data center in Duluth, Minnesota, while Thomson Reuters' announced the following month it opened its new $50 million data center in Eagan, Minnesota.

The Mankato data center also features dual-path fiber optic SONET network paths, enabling the facility to offer highly-available connectivity. From its data centers, HickoryTech customers can access multiple tier 1 ISPs and nearly any national carrier.

"HickoryTech is unique in Minnesota in offering two separate geographically diverse data centers, which are connected with our highly redundant, high-bandwidth fiber network," says John Morton, president of HickoryTech's Business Solutions division. "Customers can leverage either or both facilities, plus our services and expertise to create their own redundant private clouds for business applications and services. This alleviates the need for these customers to invest capital and other important resources in building their own data centers."

On its website, HickoryTech says it provides "integrated communication products and services to business and residential customers over a regional fiber network."

Founded in 1898, the company provides a range of services including local voice, long distance, high-speed Internet, digital TV and IP networking services to residential and business customers.
