On May 12, the 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the Sichuan province, killing nearly 70 thousand and leaving close to five million homeless, to date.
Cirtex says it hopes to raise more than $10,000 in donations to Mercy Corps (mercycorps.org), an international relief organization that is leading the disaster response effort. So far, the organization has delivered 22 truckloads of essential supplies to displaced families in affected areas and continues to assess victims' immediate needs.
"Both as a member of the business community, and more importantly, as humans, we have a moral imperative to do everything we can to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts in China," says Cirtex president John Xie. "Nearly a month after the tragedy, the need for assistance keeps getting larger. Based in New York City, we know what it's like to ask for help after a tragedy."
In 2005, many web hosting companies showed their support by donating money and free services to victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Similarly, CirtexHosting, the company's shared hosting division, has donated web hosting and development services to GracefulYouth (gracefulyouth.org/). The nonprofit organization has more than 100 volunteers that lend their financial and logistical support to relief organizations operating within China.
The company says it will continue to evaluate additional opportunities to offer assistance to relief efforts in China and other parts of the world as part of its corporate pledge.
Founded in 2003, Cirtex provides range of hosting services, including shared, reseller and dedicated solutions. The company serves a global customer base through its three brands--CirtexHosting, MySitesOnline and HostV.
And though companies like Cirtex choose to lend their support to the China earthquake relief, others have gone the other route, exploiting the disaster. Last month, hackers exploited the natural disaster by writing and distributing malware, while others deployed phishing attacks.
