May 9, 2008 : Internap Plans Green Boston Facility

📅 May 9, 2008 - Internet business solutions provider Internap Network Services (internap.com -> inap.com) announced on Friday it plans to add around 15,000 square feet of colocation at a new stand-alone 45,000 square foot facility adjacent to its existing Boston data center.


This week has seen more than the usual number of new data center announcements. On Thursday alone, Technical Real Estate announced it has started construction on a new 32,000 square foot facility in Sydney, Australia while Commtouch launched a new data center in Hong Kong.

According to the press release, the expansion will help Internap meet strong demand for its bundled Internet solutions. The first phase of is expected to be complete in the fourth quarter of this year.

Internap says the new facility will take advantage of more environmentally friendly technologies including ultrasonic humidification, air economizers and circuit level power monitoring, all designed to "provide a less energy intensive solution, as compared to previous generations of data centers."

"This initiative is part of our strategic plan to enhance data center offerings in key markets," says Internap CEO James P. DeBlasio. "With this expansion in Boston, Internap now has its ninth owned facility and a total of 43 colocation service points, demonstrating our commitment to serving our customers' growth requirements now and in the future."

According to reports by Data Center Knowledge, Internap now has a total footprint of 185,000 square feet, consisting of around 103,000 square feet managed by Internap and 81,000 square feet in colocation centers. Internap says it has more than 3,700 companies around the world that "trust Internap to help them achieve their Internet business goals."

Last week, alerting and response services provider Send Word Now partnered with Internap to enable its customers to distribute mass alerts by phone, text and email during time-sensitive or crisis situations.
