👈 Official Responses: 0) announced on Tuesday it will build an $18 to $19 million Tier 3 data center in Duluth, Minnesota to provide colocation and managed hosting services to the area.
The new data center will be an approximately 50,000 square foot facility with 10,000 to 15,000 square feet of raised floor space, which is enough space to store about 360 to 540 server cabinets.
The facility will be built to Uptime Institute's (uptimeinstitute.org) Tier 3 standards and will be SAS 70 Type 2 compliant. This expansion will add to VISI's existing 14,000 square feet of data center raised floor space in the Twin Cities metro area.
"The City of Duluth met and exceeded our criteria for a data center location because of access to redundant telecommunication and electrical infrastructure, insulation from natural disaster and an educated workforce," says Mike Sowada, CEO of VISI. "This project has the potential to be a catalyst for the growth of the industrial technology sector in Duluth."
VISI will soon begin construction on the new facility, and expects to complete the facility in spring 2009. The project will generate over 75 jobs through construction and other local purchasing, and once complete, the facility will create 10 new full-time jobs with additional positions being added as more data center customers sign on.
Minnesota Power has partnered with Area Partnership for Economic Expansion to conduct research that revealed the need for a regional data center. Additionally, local Duluth companies surveyed showed a high level of interest in a Duluth facility.
VISI is currently negotiating with SMDC Health System to be an anchor tenant for its data center, where SMDC will occupy over 2,000 square feet of the facility. VISI is also currently negotiating other local contracts and plans to be operational in Duluth within 12 months.
As Minnesota's largest locally-owned managed hosting and connectivity provider, VISI offers managed hosting, colocation and Internet connectivity services. The company serves more than 11,000 business and residential customers throughout Minnesota with products and services including SAS 70 Type 2 data centers in St. Paul and Minneapolis.
