Mar 31, 2008 : Netcraft Releases March Survey

📅 - Web analytics firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) announced last week that it received responses from 162,662,052 websites in its March 2008 survey. The number of websites continues to rise over the last few months, with four and a half million new sites gained since February.

In what appears to be a growing theme, the largest changes for March were found amongst blogging and social network providers. Google saw increases in its developer share by gaining 842 thousand host names, most of which are used for blogs hosted on Blogspot (blogspot.com)

And despite MySpace (myspace.com) gaining almost 200 thousand host names this month, the total number of active sites significantly decreased after more users switched their profiles to private status.

Apple recently started hosting websites made using its own iWeb (apple.com/ilife/iweb) program, which is a template-based Web page creation tool whose latest version is bundled with Apple's iLife package. The majority -- more than 24 thousand -- of iWeb sites are being served from a single IP address, using the new AppleDotMacServer-1B5626 Web server.

Although Google gained more shares this month than any other developer, the LiteSpeed Web server continues to see rapid growth. This month, it grew by more than a quarter and is now serving 605 thousand websites globally.

Netcraft announced earlier this month that Tiscali Italia is the most reliable hosting company site for February 2008, followed by myhosting.com, Kattare, Datapipe and Swishmail.
