May 8, 2001 : Exodus Explosion Causes Yahoo Stall

📅 - Web hosting company Exodus Communications Inc. (http://www.exodus.com) said on Tuesday that its power supply was partially cut off on Monday by an explosion, leading to temporary interruptions in service for some customers, including Web portal Yahoo!.

Exodus says the incident cut off the company's power supply from Pacific Gas & Electric to one of its data centers in Sunnyvale, California. Exodus's backup generators failed to kick in, leading to an outage lasting about an hour, beginning at 2:50 pm. The outage had nothing to do with the State-imposed rolling blackouts scheduled for later that day.
In a statement Tuesday, Exodus said that service was interrupted for approximately 60 minutes due to the interruption of commercial power supply from Pacific Gas & Electric resulting from a PG&E underground vault explosion.
The outage affected Yahoo! and some other Exodus customers. Services, including Yahoo!'s instant messaging service, were unavailable for much of the afternoon, but were restored by 6:45 pm.
Yahoo! clarified a statement from Monday that claimed the outage was the result of statewide power shortages, saying that the interruption in service was due to the Exodus power outage, but that service returned to normal in approximately three hours.
Exodus says that although each of its data centers is equipped with uninterruptible power supply systems and backup diesel generators to sustain operations during a utility power interruption, the systems at the affected data center failed to roll over to backup power.
The company says its engineers are performing a root cause analysis to determine why the operations did not roll over to the backup generators. Exodus hopes to prevent such occurrences in the future.
