May 9, 2001 : Host Bails On Olympic Web Site

📅 - Organizers of the Winter Olympics competition in Salt Lake City said on Tuesday that their Internet sponsor has backed out of its Web hosting deal for the upcoming games.

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee said that the California-based company Logictier (http://www.logictier.com), which designs and manages Web sites, is reorganizing its business, and is no longer able to work with the committee on the SaltLake2002.com Web site.
The Salt Lake Organizing Committee says that as a result of the recent decision by Logictier, the committee will immediately begin looking for a new partner to host the SaltLake2002.com site. Logictier has agreed to continue to host the Web site until the committee finds a replacement partner.
According to the committee, it is flexible enough to rearrange its commitment with Logictier, but is very dependant on the Web site, and will have to find a solution quickly.
With funding from venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Logictier was founded in September of 1999. The company announced in August that it had been named the official Internet operations sponsor and supplier for the 2002 Olympic Games. According to the deal, Logictier said it would work closely with the committee to launch the hardware, software, security , facilities, bandwidth and technical support necessary for operation of the site.
The company's decision to pull out of the deal followed problems with another major Olympics deal. In a joint venture, NBC and San Francisco-based Quokka Sports had chosen Logictier in February to manage the operations of NBCOlympics.com. Last month, Quokka filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
