May 11, 2001 : IBM Launches Linux Web Portal
📅 - Computer making giant IBM Corp. announced on Friday that it has launched a new Web portal designed to serve its business partners, employees and members of the Linux community. The site (ibm.com/linux) is designed to provide users with access to the latest news, downloadable copies of the latest Linux tools and links to Linux content throughout the ibm.com Web space and on other Linux sites.
IBM says the launch of the new site strengthens the company's commitment to Linux and the open source community. Citing a report by the Tower Group, IBM says that by the year 2004, Linux will have 38 percent of the operating system market and will have become the largest server platform.
According to IBM, by launching the Web site, the company is able to showcase its support across the Linux arena, including hardware, software and services.
The site is designed to offer content relevant to Linux users of all kinds. IBM says developers accessing the site can access the latest in Linux and open source tools, tips and tutorials. The can download and evaluate the latest software, as well as reviewing IBM's contributions to the Linux community. Corporate users can find information on Linux's ability to meet the demands of the enterprise.
In conjunction with the Web site, IBM is also launching a new electronic newsletter, The Linux Line, which users can sign up for on the site.
The Web site is run on an IBM Linux system, including two load-balanced eServer xSeries servers.
