Level 3 Activates North Asian Undersea Cable Connecting Hong Kong and Japan

📅 - Web hosting and broadband service provider Level 3 Communications today announced that it has activated the first leg of the company's new multi-terabit North Asian undersea cable system connecting Hong Kong and Japan.

The system system offers a maximum capacity of 1.3 terabits per second on its Hong Kong to Japan leg, and 1.9 terabits on the second leg linking Japan, Korea and Hong Kong.
The company says France Telecom became the first company to buy capacity on Level 3's new cable by purchasing international private line service earlier this month.
"The activation of our new undersea fiber-optic cable system between Hong Kong and Japan underscores Level 3's commitment to providing the most cost- effective broadband services to carriers and other communications companies in key Asian Internet markets,'' said Steve Liddell, CEO of Level 3 Asia. "The new cable links to the Japan-US cable network and Level 3's extensive network in the United States and Europe, providing seamless, end-to-end connectivity to major destinations around the world.''
Level 3 operates an 80,000 square-foot data center in Hong Kong and a 63,000 square-foot data center in Tokyo.
It's been a busy couple of weeks for Level 3; yesterday, shares in the company jumped when Level 3 announced an agreement to provide broadband services for six Microsoft Internet properties.
Last week, the Colorado-based company, which specializes in providing Internet services like Web hosting, broadband transport and IP services, said it would cut its global work force by 1,400 and cut projections for sales and expenditures for the remainder of fiscal 2001 and fiscal 2002. The company also said that it still expects second-quarter results to be fairly close to previous targets.
