Sun Microsystems Unveils Maintenance-Free E-commerce Solution
📅 - Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced the company has joined with Wincor Nixdorf, Inc. and ADS Retail to demonstrate SmartClient, a managed, in-store e-commerce system.
vThe companies say SmartClient meets three of the most important computing needs for large retailers: the ability to inexpensively manage and update local servers and point of sale (POS) terminals centrally without onsite support, the power to process and record sales even when a connection to the server is lost, and technology that is easy for sales associates to use.
The SmartClient solution combines POS specialist Wincor Nixdorf's BEETLE thin-client terminal with ADS Retail's NextorPOS application software. The system is then powered by an onsite (but remotely managed) Sun Cobalt RaQ server appliance.
Each retail site runs a series of POS devices which are managed remotely from a central corporate office, thereby eliminating the need to send technicians from terminal to terminal, or store to store, to update software and perform regular maintenance.
The SmartClient POS terminal configuration plugs into a power outlet and a network connection, and it is immediately ready for use.
