Jul, 2001 : Ebone Connects European Broadband Network to US

📅 - Ebone (ebone.com) has extended its 10 gigabits (Gbps) network -- Europe's largest and fastest optical broadband and IP network -- to the United States over its own sub-sea fiber facilities.

The company says this creates one of the fastest transatlantic IP network in service today, and the only network that seamlessly connects all of Europe to the USA at 10Gpbs via a single service level agreement that offers unprecedented speed and availability guarantees across two continents.
Ebone's 10 Gbps transatlantic network operates over one of the most advanced sub-sea networks in service today. Ebone has the equivalent of a transatlantic fiber pair throughout this system, and has extended its live IP network between the two continents using the latest optical and IP technologies. The capacity on this new 10 Gbps network is equivalent to the capacity required to carry 500,000 cinema-quality films.
This transfer of traffic from leased transatlantic facilities to its own transatlantic fiber network will reduce Ebone's monthly operating costs by approximately EUR 1.2 million. Previously, the company had highlighted the high cost of leased transatlantic facilities as one of the most significant factors affecting margins during the first half of the 2001 calendar and financial year.
John Shearing, Ebone senior vice president of service delivery, said: "The launch of our 10Gbp IP network to the US allows us to extend our existing 10Gbp backbone network connecting London, Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt to two centers in New York. This, together with our hosting centers and streaming capabilities in four major European cities, provides unparalleled capacity to support our growth and meet rising demands for IP, media and other services."
