Qwest is deploying the Cisco solutions to rapidly expand its network withinimportant US cities to accommodate increasing customer demand for dataservices.
Qwest chose the Cisco 12416 Internet Router, an industry-leading platformfor 10 Gbps networking, for select network expansions. For leased lineapplications Qwest will deploy the Cisco 10008 Internet Router, theindustry's highest density IP edge services aggregator. To cost-effectivelyextend voice and data services into its 25 local networks throughout thecountry, Qwest chose the market leading ONS 15454 Metro Optical TransportPlatform.
This announcement represents another step forward in the strategicrelationship between Qwest and Cisco, which began formally in 1998 withQwest launching the industry's first OC-48 nationwide IP network using Cisco12012 Internet Routers. Today, Qwest offers a full spectrum of Web hostingand managed services, application service provider and professional servicescombined with a global OC-192 broadband communications network anddata-center infrastructure.
"Cisco's ability to deliver high performing and reliable products in boththe long-haul and metro networks will play a major part in Qwest's build-outplans," said James Becker, executive VP of Qwest worldwide networks. "Qwestis aggressively pursuing metro network build-out and service deployment."
The core IP backbone and edge component of Cisco's IP+Optical solutioncombines 12416 Internet Routers and 10008 Internet Routers to deliver highscalability, flexibility, and performance for service delivery across allnetworks and locations. In its local networks, Qwest is deploying themarket leading ONS 15454, a solution already widely used in Qwest'snationwide optical transport infrastructure with over 1,000 platformsalready in place.
