Internap Unveils Tool to Measure Internet Backbone Performance

internap.com logoSeptember 11, 2001 - Internap Network Services (internap.com), a leading providerof intelligent routing services over the Internet, has unveiled PathView, aportal that measures hourly performance metrics of the major Internetbackbones and compares those to Internap's "best path" route selection, atthe Networld+Interop (http://www.interop.com) industry trade show in Atlanta today.

The tool, the first of its kind from an Internet connectivity provider, wasdeveloped to allow customers to monitor how the actual performance ofInternap's Overlay Network stacks up against guaranteed service levels inInternap's multi-backbone SLA. This service leverages Internap's uniquenetwork architecture of redundant backbone connections from multipleInternap Service Points, which in sum create detailed, holistic views of theInternet's major global backbones.
PathView provides a map-based graphical interface of global performance withthe ability to drill down into specific service points and paths. For eachmeasured path, metrics include latency, packet loss, and networkavailability. The Web-based portal also offers an historic view of eachmetric using standard browser software. In addition, customers can trackthe performance of Internap's network in reaching important Web sitedestinations around the world.
Customers can use the PathView portal within their Network OperationsCenters to monitor the performance of their connectivity with a full-screenglobal map view that automatically refreshes with new performance data.
"PathView provides visibility into Internap's "best path" approach toInternet routing by comparing Internap's performance metrics to those of thelargest backbones," said John Scanlon, Internap's vice president of serviceplanning. "The combination of Internap's multi-carrier SLA, and our newperformance measurement portal, provide necessary levels of control andassurance to businesses considering the Internet as a viable networkingalternative to costly frame relay, ATM and private networks."
This tool supports Internap's SLA which is the broadest in the Internetindustry today, providing guarantees for latency, packet loss and networkavailability for a broad array of public backbones, rather than the industrystandard of guaranteeing performance over a single IP backbone. Internap'sSLA also includes new guarantees for installation intervals as well as theindustry's first proactive credits on problem resolution times.
